General Sales Manager Job Responsibilities

  • Lead all new and pre-owned vehicle sales operations
  • Develop and execute strategies to achieve sales volume, gross profit, and market share objectives
  • Recruit, train, coach, and mentor sales managers, finance managers, and sales consultants
  • Monitor daily, weekly, and monthly sales performance metrics and adjust strategies as needed
  • Ensure compliance with dealership policies, manufacturer programs, and all applicable regulations
  • Partner with the General Manager to establish departmental goals and operating plans
  • Manage inventory levels, vehicle aging, pricing, and merchandising strategies
  • Drive customer satisfaction initiatives and maintain a customer-first culture
  • Oversee desking, deal structure, and sales processes to maximize profitability and customer experience
  • Conduct performance evaluations and ongoing coaching for department personnel
  • Collaborate with marketing teams to support lead generation and sales conversion efforts
  • Analyze market trends, competitive activity, and business opportunities
  • Maintain strong relationships with manufacturer representatives and key business partners
  • Ensure accurate reporting and effective use of CRM and dealership management systems

General Sales Manager Benefits and Compensation

The General Sales Manager position is paid on a pay scale that may include one or more of the following compensation elements:

  • Hourly compensation, which varies based on experience, role level, and performance
  • Commission compensation, which may be earned based on the value or amount of closed sales
  • Commission compensation may be $0.00 if no sales are made, with no fixed upper limit other than sales performance

The anticipated hourly pay range for this position is $66.00 to $117.00 per hour. Actual compensation within this range will be determined by jobrelated factors such as experience, qualifications, performance, and business needs. Commission compensation is not guaranteed.

General Sales Manager Qualifications

Required Qualifications

  • Minimum 5 years of progressive automotive sales leadership experience
  • Previous experience as a Sales Manager, Finance Director, GSM, or similar dealership leadership role
  • Demonstrated success in achieving sales and profitability goals
  • Strong leadership, coaching, and team development skills
  • Proficiency with CRM platforms, dealer management systems, and sales performance analytics
  • Excellent communication, negotiation, and customer relations abilities
  • Strong understanding of dealership operations, finance processes, and compliance requirements
  • Ability to work evenings, weekends, and other hours as business needs require

Preferred Qualifications

  • Multi-franchise dealership experience
  • Experience leading large sales teams in a high-volume retail environment
  • Bachelor's degree in Business, Management, or related field

Corporate requirements: Must be 18 years or older with a valid driver's license and clean driving record, able to pass a criminal background check and pre-employment drug screen.
