Job description

Job Title:Veterinary Technician

JOB STATUS: Full Time,Non-Exempt (Hourly), 40hr/week

Reports To:Lead Veterinary Technician andVeterinaryChief Medical Officer


POSITION SUMMARY

The Veterinary Technicianis responsible forassistingwith the Community Pet Clinic and meeting the health care needs of HSCC's dogs, cats, and small animals. The Veterinary Technician will provide clinical and administrative support for veterinary wellness programs and animals in HSCC's care.

ESSENTIALFUNCTIONS

  • Assistswithspay/neuterand other surgeriesfor both shelter and community animals, includingcheck inexams,monitoringof patients from induction through recovery, preparation ofinduction drugs,supplies,and instruments, restraint of animals,surgical prep of animals,and cleaning of themed room and surgery suite
  • Assistswithin personclient care for Community Pet Clinic clients for spay/neuter and wellness clinics, including answering the clinicemail as needed.
  • Maintainsaccuratecomputer and paper records for medications and treatmentsfor shelter animals, enters data intoShelterLuvsoftware databaseregardinganimal care, medication, surgeries, and followup
  • Maintainaccuraterecords, including entry of service items, invoicing, and payments in the Community Pet Clinic software (Daysmart)
  • Assistsveterinarians in dentistryand other surgeries beyond spay/neuter, asneeded
  • Performs basic animal medical assessment and triage toassistthe veterinarian asneeded
  • Prepares and interpretsbasic diagnostictests
  • Assistveterinarian and/orLead Vet Techwith euthanasia asneeded
  • Assistwith taking inventory weekly for Lead Vet Tech to placeorders
  • Performs duties such as laundry, cleaning instruments, and other tasksasneeded
  • Maintains solid attendance andpunctuality

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • A minimum of1-yearpreviousapplicable work experience in a veterinary clinic and/or animal shelter clinicrequired;previoussurgicalassistanceexperiencerequired
  • Veterinary Technician Certification or significant related experience desired
  • Proficiencywith intubation, IV catheter placement, andinjection techniques
  • Direct animal care experience isrequired: restraining animals, cleaning enclosures, and administeringmedications
  • Comfortable monitoring anesthesia andassistingwithsurgery
  • Experiencemaintainingcomputerized medical records

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Ability to bend, twist, and to lift up to 50lbs
  • Ability to perform moderate to heavy physical labor
  • Ability to handle animals, including large canines

WORKPLACE ENVIRONMENT

  • HSCC is a busy animal shelter environment with frequent noise and with the presence of animal dander and potential allergens
  • Possible exposureto sick, under-socialized and/or reactive animals in addition to potential exposure to parasites and infectious disease
  • A variety of cleaning agents are used in the facility to ensure cleanliness and the safety of animals and staff, as such use of personal protective equipment (PPE)in accordance withsafety protocols may berequired
