Job description

POSITION DESCRIPTION
Position: Shift Supervisor
Supervisor: Walnut Park Shelter Manager
Location: Walnut Park Shelter
Hours: Thursday-Monday 8am-4pm
Wage: $27.56/hr
Eligible for Language Differential
Classification: Non-Exempt, Unrepresented, Full-Time, Temporary, Benefit Eligible
This is a temporary assignment with a maximum length of six (6) months; duration may vary based on program needs, with the possibility of moving to permanent status.
GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES
Assist in the oversight of shelter services and programming in a manner that is consistent with Transition Projects mission, values, policies and procedures. Function as the operational supervisor of shelter shift activities. Provide advocacy, information, and referral services to participants staying in emergency shelters. Actively participate in shelter processes and work as part of a team to provide services to participants.
SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES
  1. Provide leadership, support, and positive role modeling for shelter staff. Promote a team environment where participant needs and success are paramount.
  2. Demonstrate and empower staff to take initiative, problem solve, prevent and deescalate crises, and while maintaining a safe space.
  3. Function as an active member of the shelter staff team.
  4. Perform all of the functions of residential positions, including but not limited to Residential Advocate and Custodian.
  5. Facilitate staff and team meetings in the absence of the manager.
  6. Coordinate and provide coverage for team members when they are absent.
  7. Assist in developing and implementing on-the-job training and guidance for Residential Advocates.
  8. Provide support and assist staff in following policies and procedures.
  9. Assist with program design, implementation, and evaluation to increase access to and efficiency of the residential programs, as directed.
  10. Function as the managing supervisor of operations and staff as directed or in absence of manager and/or director, including extended absence and position vacancy.
  11. Contribute to the selection of staff during the hiring process.
  12. Contribute to the performance evaluation of staff, including performance appraisals, performance improvement plans, and disciplinary action. As directed, assist in the semi-monthly review and approval of staff timecards in Paycom, including correcting all clocking errors and approving time off requests in a timely manner.
  13. Other duties as assigned.

PERFORMANCE REQUIREMENTS
Each Transition Projects employee must:
  1. Acquire First Aid/CPR/AED certification within 30 days of hire and be retested biannually thereafter throughout employment.
  2. Complete Bloodborne Pathogens and Narcan Training within 30 days of hire and be retested annually thereafter throughout employment.
  3. Demonstrate reliability by being present for work as scheduled, arriving and leaving on time and taking breaks in expected time frames.
  4. Interact effectively with persons of diverse ethnic backgrounds, religious views, cultural backgrounds, and sexual orientations and treat each individual with respect and dignity.
  5. Attend agency and program staff meetings.

PHYSICAL/MENTAL REQUIREMENTS
The physical and mental demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee, with or without accommodation, to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.
  1. Hearing and vision adequate for interaction with participants, interaction with staff and interaction with the general public.
  2. Hearing adequate for telephone work. Vision adequate for close work.
  3. Hand and finger dexterity adequate to operate standard office equipment.
  4. Ability to walk, bend, stand, sit, reach, stoop, pull, squat, and climb stairs and ladders.
  5. Sitting at a desk completing paperwork and working on a computer for lengthy periods.
  6. Mobility to allow responsive traveling to participant residences located around the metro area.
  7. Ability to perform CPR and other emergency life-saving care with the assistance of teammates until emergency responders arrive.
  8. Ability to lift up to 50 pounds.

WORKING CONDITIONS / SAFETY CONSIDERATIONS
  1. Work environments may include exposure to animals/pets across various program sites.
  2. This position may have exposure to bloodborne pathogens or other infectious materials during the course of duties. Bloodborne pathogens training, safety protocols, and appropriate protective equipment are provided. The Hepatitis B vaccination is offered at no cost.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
The right individual for this position is resourceful and innovative, a strong leader, has a passion for helping others, and is able to deal with difficult situations in positive and constructive ways. This position also requires the following qualifications:
  1. Bachelor's degree in a related field, or two (2) years of social services experience, or one (1) year of experience working at Transition Projects.
  2. Demonstrated ability to train, lead, and provide support to colleagues.
  3. Demonstrated ability to be an effective problem solver.
  4. Understanding of the issues surrounding homelessness, chemical dependency, mental health, domestic violence and sexual assault.
  5. Demonstrated ability to work independently. Ability to appropriately assess a situation and take corrective action as necessary.
  6. Knowledge of services available to low-income and homeless persons through Transition Projects and other agencies or the demonstrated ability to obtain such knowledge.
  7. Demonstrated ability to work as part of a team in the delivery of services to participants.
  8. Computer literacy. Demonstrated ability to use word processing, database, spreadsheet, e- mail, and Internet programs.
  9. Excellent oral, written, and telephone communication skills. Excellent interpersonal skills.
  10. Bilingual English/Spanish fluency is strongly preferred.
  11. Office/clerical experience. Familiarity with office equipment (copier, fax, multi-line phone system, etc.).
