What is data translation?

Data translation is the process of converting data from one format, structure, or language into another to ensure compatibility and usability across different systems or platforms. Professionals in data translation typically work with databases, software applications, and data integration tools to interpret, map, and transform data accurately. This role is essential in industries where data needs to flow seamlessly between different departments, organizations, or technologies. The goal is to maintain data integrity and enable efficient data analysis and reporting.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a data translator, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Data Translator, you need a solid understanding of data analytics, business operations, and domain expertise, often supported by a relevant degree in business, analytics, or technology. Familiarity with data visualization tools (like Tableau or Power BI), basic statistical software, and experience bridging data teams with business stakeholders are typical requirements. Exceptional communication, problem-solving ability, and stakeholder management skills set top performers apart in this role. These skills and qualities are crucial for transforming complex data insights into actionable business strategies that drive organizational value.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals in data translation roles, and how can they be addressed?

Data Translation professionals often encounter challenges such as bridging communication gaps between technical teams and business stakeholders, translating complex data insights into actionable business recommendations, and ensuring data accuracy and integrity during the translation process. To address these challenges, it's important to develop strong interpersonal and communication skills, stay updated on both business objectives and technical tools, and foster collaborative relationships across departments. Additionally, adopting visualization tools and frameworks can help present data in a more accessible manner for non-technical audiences.

Job description

The Company
Dexcom Corporation (NASDAQ DXCM) is a pioneer and global leader in continuous glucose monitoring (CGM). Dexcom began as a small company with a big dream: To forever change how diabetes is managed. To unlock information and insights that drive better health outcomes. Here we are 25 years later, having pioneered an industry. And we're just getting started. We are broadening our vision beyond diabetes to empower people to take control of health. That means personalized, actionable insights aimed at solving important health challenges. To continue what we've started: Improving human health.
We are driven by thousands of ambitious, passionate people worldwide who are willing to fight like warriors to earn the trust of our customers by listening, serving with integrity, thinking big, and being dependable. We've already changed millions of lives and we're ready to change millions more. Our future ambition is to become a leading consumer health technology company while continuing to develop solutions for serious health conditions. We'll get there by constantly reinventing unique biosensing-technology experiences. Though we've come a long way from our small company days, our dreams are bigger than ever. The opportunity to improve health on a global scale stands before us.
Meet the team:
Welcome to Dexcom's Behavioral Science team - a multidisciplinary group applying behavioral science, qualitative research, and data-driven insights to shape product strategy, clinical evidence, and patient-centered innovation. Within Behavioral Science, the Rapid Evidence and Translation (REAT) team synthesizes published evidence to support strategic and commercial decision-making and translates insights into decision-ready outputs for product and service functions across the organization.
We are seeking a PhD-level behavioral scientist and evidence-translation specialist who can interpret and communicate research - not primarily produce itto join the Behavioral Science team. This role will sit at the intersection of behavioral research, evidence synthesis, evidence interpretation, and cross-functional business strategy. The ideal candidate will help synthesize and translate behavioral and psychosocial evidence into actionable insights that inform product development, clinical strategy, claims generation, customer education, and broader organizational decision-making. This individual will conduct rapid evidence reviews to answer priority business questions, partner with BeSci data teams to translate behavioral insights into measurable outcomes and support the development of evidence-based claims. This is a highly cross-functional role requiring scientific rigor, strong critical-appraisal and evidence-synthesis skills, excellent communication skills, and the ability to convert complex behavioral science concepts into clear, practical recommendations for internal stakeholders.
This is an evidence-interpretation and translation role. The successful candidate interprets, synthesizes, and communicates analyses conducted by partner data science teams - they are not responsible for performing primary statistical analysis or model development themselves.
Where you come in:
  • Evidence Reviews and Strategic Insight Generation: Lead and support rapid evidence reviews to answer high-priority business questions. Synthesize published literature, real-world evidence, internal research findings, and behavioral science frameworks into clear, business-relevant insights. Translate complex behavioral, psychosocial, and clinical evidence into practical recommendations for cross-functional stakeholders. Identify evidence gaps and recommend opportunities for future research, analysis, or claims development

  • Behavioral Science and Analytics Translation: Work closely with Behavioral Science data teams to translate behavioral insights into measurable data strategies. Support the development of behavioral metrics, taxonomies, and analytic frameworks that help characterize user engagement, behavior change, product experience, and psychosocial outcomes. Help define meaningful behavioral outcomes and data signals that can be used across cross-functional initiatives. Contribute to the development of dashboards, insight repositories, and internal tools that make behavioral evidence more accessible and actionable.

  • Claims and Evidence Translation: Support the generation of evidence-based claims related to behavioral outcomes, psychosocial value, user engagement, self-management, confidence, satisfaction, and behavior change. Evaluate the strength of available evidence and help determine whether findings are suitable for internal positioning, external communication, or formal claims development.

What makes you successful:
  • PhD in Behavioral Science, Health Psychology, Psychology, Public Health, Behavioral Medicine, Epidemiology, Cognitive Science, Decision Science, Human Factors, or a related field.
  • Experience conducting literature reviews, rapid evidence reviews, systematic or targeted evidence syntheses, or evidence-based strategy work.
  • Strong understanding of behavioral science theories, behavior change frameworks, psychosocial outcomes, and patient/user experience research.
  • Ability to critically appraise and interpret quantitative and mixed-methods findings - survey data, patient-reported outcomes, real-world data, product engagement data, and behavioral analytics - without primary responsibility for conducting the analyses.
  • Ability to translate scientific evidence into actionable recommendations for business, product, clinical, or commercial stakeholders.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including experience developing presentations, reports, or executive-facing summaries.

What you'll get:
  • A front row seat to life changing CGM technology. Learn about our brave #dexcomwarriors community.
  • A full and comprehensive benefits program.
  • Growth opportunities on a global scale.
  • Access to career development through in-house learning programs and/or qualified tuition reimbursement.
  • An exciting and innovative, industry-leading organization committed to our employees, customers, and the communities we serve.

Travel Required:

Experience and Education Requirements:
  • Typically requires a Bachelor's degree in a technical discipline, and a minimum of 8 - 12 years of related experience. Or a Master's degree and 5 - 7 years of equivalent experience. Or a PhD and 2 - 4 years of experience.
