Data Science New Grad information

What is a data science new grad?

Data Science New Grad roles are entry-level positions designed for recent graduates who have completed a degree in data science, computer science, statistics, or a related field. These roles typically involve working with data to analyze trends, build predictive models, and support business decision-making. New grads are expected to have foundational knowledge in programming, statistics, and machine learning, but are not required to have extensive work experience. These roles often offer mentorship and training to help new professionals grow their technical and analytical skills. Companies hire Data Science New Grads to bring fresh perspectives and to develop future data science talent.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a data science new grad?

To thrive as a Data Science New Grad, you need a strong foundation in statistics, programming (typically Python or R), and data analysis, often supported by a degree in computer science, mathematics, or a related field. Familiarity with machine learning frameworks (such as TensorFlow or scikit-learn), data visualization tools, and SQL databases is highly valued. Strong problem-solving abilities, communication skills, and curiosity help new grads stand out when interpreting data and presenting insights. These competencies are crucial for transforming complex data into actionable business solutions and collaborating effectively within multidisciplinary teams.

What types of projects can a data science new grad expect to work on during their first year?

As a Data Science New Grad, you can expect to work on a variety of projects such as cleaning and preprocessing data, developing predictive models, and assisting with data visualization and reporting. You may also collaborate closely with product managers, engineers, and senior data scientists to translate business problems into analytical solutions. Early projects often focus on building foundational skills and understanding the company’s data infrastructure, while gradually increasing in complexity as you gain experience. This hands-on exposure is designed to help you grow technically and understand how data science supports organizational goals.

Job description

The Artificial Intelligence (AI) Core is a key component of the NIH funded P30 Digestive Diseases Research Core Center grant, which is entitled the Mayo Clinic Center for Cell Signaling in Gastroenterology. We are seeking a Senior Data Science Analyst to join our AI core to help develop, organize, and employ agentic AI based solutions powered by stacked frontier models. The focus of the core initially will be on spatial biology and multimodal omics integration to aid P30 members in discovery science. In this role, you will work for the AI Core along with a medical and scientific director (co-directors) and actively support members in the use of agentic AI models while simultaneously driving the rigorous experimental frameworks required to validate them. By bridging the gap between model training and statistical science, you will ensure our systems are not just performative, but biologically generalizable and ready to transform the future of digestive disease research.

Data Scientists at Mayo Clinic perform detailed analysis of large bodies of scientific data in order to discover new patterns and insights having an impact ultimately upon patient health. The preferred candidate has advanced expertise in AI, machine learning, deep learning, statistical data processing, regression techniques, neural networks, decision trees, clustering, pattern recognition, probability theory, and data science methods and the mathematical theories underlying these tools used to analyze data. The individual should have advanced knowledge of computational biology data types, topics, and scientific challenges and approaches.

You may work with knowledge architects, informaticians, and clinicians at Mayo to develop and deploy applications to bring AI and analytic solutions to nontechnical users, often at the point of omics data including transcriptomics, genetics, proteomics, and spatial biology. The core applies and modifies existing scripts or software applications to support data management, data extraction, data analysis, and AI, as required, by leveraging advanced statistical modeling, operations research, machine learning, or data mining techniques. You will provide consultative services at a scientific level to support scientific projects. You will be housed within a digital biology-focused team focused on advanced AI technology for Mayo Clinic Digital Pathology.

Note: Visa sponsorship is not available for this position. Must be a U.S. citizen, permanent resident, refugee, or asylee. Mayo Clinic does not support the OPT STEM program.
