As of Jun 27, 2026, the average hourly pay for data science entry in California is $19.22, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $16.15 and $21.59 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

How do I become a data scientist with no experience?

To become a data scientist with no experience, focus on building foundational skills in programming (Python or R), statistics, and data analysis through online courses and tutorials. Gaining hands-on experience with projects, participating in competitions like Kaggle, and learning tools such as SQL and machine learning frameworks can help demonstrate your abilities to employers.

Can I work a data entry job with no experience?

Data entry jobs typically require basic computer skills and attention to detail but often do not require prior experience. Many employers offer entry-level positions that provide on-the-job training, making it possible to start without previous experience. Familiarity with tools like spreadsheets and data management software can be helpful.

What types of projects can entry-level data scientists expect to work on, and how do these projects support team goals?

As an entry-level data scientist, you will typically work on projects such as data cleaning, exploratory data analysis, building simple predictive models, and creating data visualizations. These tasks are foundational and help support the broader team by preparing datasets, uncovering actionable insights, and ensuring data quality. You'll often collaborate with more experienced data scientists, engineers, and business analysts, contributing to larger projects and gradually taking on more responsibility as you gain experience. This collaborative environment helps you learn best practices and understand how your work impacts the organization's objectives.

What are Data Science Entry jobs?

Data Science Entry jobs are positions designed for individuals who are new to the field of data science, often recent graduates or career changers. These roles typically involve working with data to extract insights, performing basic data cleaning, exploratory analysis, and supporting more senior data scientists. Entry-level data scientists may use tools like Python, R, SQL, and data visualization platforms. The goal is to build foundational skills in data analysis, statistics, and machine learning while contributing to projects under supervision.

Is it possible to get a data science job with no experience?

Entry-level data science positions often require some knowledge of programming, statistics, and data analysis tools like Python or R. While prior experience is not always mandatory, candidates typically need relevant coursework, projects, or certifications to demonstrate their skills to employers.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Entry-Level Data Scientist, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Entry-Level Data Scientist, you need a solid foundation in statistics, programming (typically Python or R), and data analysis, usually supported by a degree in a quantitative field. Familiarity with tools like SQL, data visualization platforms (e.g., Tableau), and machine learning frameworks (such as scikit-learn or TensorFlow) is highly valued. Strong problem-solving abilities, curiosity, and effective communication skills help you translate complex data insights into actionable business recommendations. These competencies are crucial for extracting value from data, driving informed decisions, and succeeding in collaborative, data-driven environments.

Is 40 too late for data science?

Data science entry-level roles do not have an age limit, and many professionals start careers in their 30s or later. Success depends on acquiring relevant skills such as programming, statistics, and data analysis, often through online courses or certifications, regardless of age.

POSITION SUMMARY

We are seeking a motivated and detail-oriented entry-level scientist to support curation and standardization of experimental assay data stored within an internal LIMS database. A successful candidate will review existing records, apply a consistent and pre-defined naming scheme, and work directly with scientists to resolve ambiguous or undocumented experimental information.

This is a highly collaborative, data-intensive role that requires a strong background in both laboratory science and data cleaning practices. An ideal candidate has hands-on or coursework exposure to biochemistry or molecular biology, is comfortable working with spreadsheets and databases, is detail-oriented, and communicates clearly and proactively.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Audit existing experimental records and identify inconsistencies, ambiguities, and duplications.
  • Flag records where information is missing, inconsistent, or requires scientific interpretation.
  • Apply pre-defined standards to an existing experimental database.
  • Translate informal lab terminology into standardized database entries.
  • Connect with scientists to clarify ambiguous pre-existing experimental information stored in the database.
  • Maintain a change log of all modifications made to existing records.
  • Assist in drafting a central style guide for data schema and data entry.
  • Participate in periodic reviews with the data sciences and lab teams to refine or create new data entry schema.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • a Bachelor's or Master’s degree in Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, Chemical Biology, Bioengineering, Protein Engineering, or a closely related field
  • Strong written and oral communication skills
  • Strong record-keeping and organizational skills
  • Familiarity with common molecular biology principles and laboratory techniques (e.g., mutagenesis, cloning, and transformation)
  • Familiarity with common protein biochemistry principles and laboratory techniques (e.g., protein expression, purification, and characterization)

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Familiarity with relational databases, Excel, or basic data querying (SQL or similar)
  • Exposure to electronic lab notebooks (ELNs) or LIMS platforms
  • Exposure to analytical instrumentation such as HPLC, LC-MS, fluorescence plate readers, or gel-based assays
  • Basic knowledge of protein structure-function relationships and mutation nomenclature
  • An understanding of directed evolution workflows
  • Basic experience generating or editing Python/R Scripts

WORK ENVIRONMENT

This is primarily a desk-based role. The candidate will work closely with both the bioinformatics team and the laboratory team and is expected to be comfortable moving between scientific and data-oriented conversations. Occasional visits to the lab to observe assay setups or review physical lab notebooks may be required.
