Data Platform Product Manager information

What is a data platform product manager?

A Data Platform Product Manager is responsible for overseeing the development, management, and strategy of an organization’s data platform. They work closely with engineering, data science, and business teams to ensure the platform meets stakeholder needs, supports data-driven decision-making, and aligns with the company's objectives. Their duties typically include defining product requirements, prioritizing features, facilitating communication across teams, and monitoring platform performance and adoption.

How does a data platform product manager typically collaborate with engineering and data teams to deliver platform features?

A Data Platform Product Manager regularly works alongside engineering and data teams by defining product requirements, prioritizing the feature backlog, and ensuring alignment with business goals. They facilitate communication among stakeholders, translate complex technical needs into actionable tasks, and help resolve roadblocks that may arise during development. This collaborative approach ensures the platform evolves to meet both user expectations and technical constraints, fostering a shared sense of ownership and delivering robust, scalable solutions.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a data platform product manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Data Platform Product Manager, you need a strong understanding of data architecture, product management principles, and analytics, often supported by a degree in computer science, engineering, or a related field. Familiarity with data warehousing technologies, cloud platforms (such as AWS, Azure, or GCP), and tools like SQL, Tableau, or Snowflake is typically required, and certifications in Agile or Scrum can be beneficial. Outstanding communication, stakeholder management, and strategic thinking are crucial soft skills that help bridge technical and business teams. These skills ensure successful product delivery, alignment with business goals, and the creation of scalable, effective data solutions.

Job description

Please Note: This is a Utah-based hybrid position which will require some regular in-office days each week. Additionally, employment with BambooHR is contingent on passing both a background and credit check.

AI at BambooHR

At BambooHR, we're all about setting people free to do great work, and we believe AI is a powerful partner in that mission. We're leaning into intelligent tools to streamline our workflows, giving us more time for high-impact innovation. We look for curious, forward-thinking people who are ready to explore how AI can elevate their work and help us reimagine the future of HR.

Essential Job Duties

We're looking for a Senior Product Manager to drive the strategy and execution of BambooHR's core data platform: the foundational layer that defines how every system, integration, and AI experience understands our data. You'll play a key role in shaping how BambooHR represents its data internally and how that foundation powers the AI-driven experiences our customers depend on.

This is not a traditional product role. You won't own a customer-facing UI. You own the layer underneath: the data definitions, contracts, and adoption process that make every product team faster, every integration simpler, and every AI interaction more accurate. Your customers are primarily internal, and when the platform is right, every team benefits.

As the Senior Product Manager for this space, you'll coordinate across product and engineering teams to define and evolve the canonical data model, partner with architects to make hard technical tradeoffs, and connect foundational platform work to real customer outcomes.

You will:

  • Drive alignment on data definitions across product and engineering teams, resolving conflicts and locking decisions that the rest of the organization can build on.
  • Coordinate a multi-team, multi-quarter effort without direct authority over the teams doing the work.
  • Partner closely with principal architects and engineering leads to make principled data modeling tradeoffs and communicate the implications broadly.
  • Ensure the data platform is easy to build against: clean APIs, well-documented contracts, and a clear upgrade path as the model evolves.
  • Build the internal case for platform investment by connecting foundational decisions to real outcomes for integrations, AI features, and customer-facing products.
  • Own the data catalog and validation process, ensuring coherence as new domains are onboarded and new entities are proposed.
  • Measure adoption and coverage. Know at any point how complete the model is, where gaps exist, and what is blocking progress.
  • Work closely with AI platform teams to ensure the data model serves as a reliable foundation for AI-driven experiences.

If you are an experienced Senior Product Manager with a passion for data infrastructure and a track record of driving complex, cross-team alignment, we encourage you to apply. Join us in building the data foundation that powers BambooHR's next generation of AI products.

What You Need to Get the Job Done

  • You feel aligned with the BambooHR values
  • 5+ years experience as a Product Manager, with a proven track record of shipping impactful products
  • Technical depth in data modeling, API design, or data infrastructure. You do not need to write the schema, but you need to read it, challenge it, and make principled decisions about what belongs in the model and what does not.
  • Proven ability to drive alignment across teams and stakeholders you do not directly control.
  • Comfort with ambiguity at the architectural level. You are energized by hard, unsolved problems, not slowed down by them.
  • Clear, direct communication with both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • You are entrepreneurial. You do not need direction. You identify the next constraint and move toward it.
  • Deep experience working with qualitative stakeholder feedback and quantitative data to inform platform decisions.
  • Nice to have: background in master data management, canonical data modeling, or developer platform product management in a SaaS environment. AI or ML infrastructure context is a plus.

What You'll Love About Us

  • A Great Company Culture that has been recognized by multiple organizations like Inc, and Salt Lake Tribune
  • Comprehensive health, life, and disability insurance
  • Generous leave policies that include 4 weeks of vacation, 12 company holidays, parental leave, and volunteer time off so you can enjoy quality of life
  • 401k plans with up to 6% company match
  • $2000 Paid-Paid Vacation bonus
  • EAP through Headspace
  • Check out all our benefits that benefit you
