Sr. Data Scientist
The Sr. Data Scientist supports institutional research and assessment by applying advanced data science techniques to help university leadership make data-informed decisions that enhance student success and advance the BYU Mission and Aims. This position develops predictive models, conducts advanced statistical analyses, and transforms complex data into meaningful insights through reports and visualizations. The role collaborates with campus stakeholders to identify emerging analytic opportunities and communicate actionable findings.
What you'll do in this position:
  • Develop predictive models and apply advanced statistical and machine learning techniques to institutional data
  • Analyze and integrate data from multiple sources to identify trends and answer strategic university questions
  • Design and evaluate studies that measure the effectiveness of student success initiatives and institutional programs
  • Create dashboards, reports, and data visualizations that communicate actionable insights to university leadership
  • Develop and maintain automated reporting tools and analytical data structures
  • Respond to ad hoc analytical requests while documenting methods, assumptions, and findings
  • Train campus partners on interactive reporting tools and data resources
  • Stay current with emerging data science, analytics, and artificial intelligence methodologies to enhance institutional research capabilities

What qualifies you for this role:
Required
  • A firm commitment to the mission of BYU.
  • Master's degree in Data Science, Statistics, Computer Science, Mathematics, Information Systems, or a related field, and two years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Expertise in Bayesian statistical modeling and advanced statistical analysis
  • Experience with predictive modeling, machine learning, and data visualization
  • Proficiency in Python, SQL, R, or similar statistical programming languages
  • Strong analytical, project management, and problem-solving skills
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to present technical concepts to diverse audiences
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and work independently as well as collaboratively

Preferred
  • Ph.D. in a related field and two to four years of relevant experience
  • Experience in higher education institutional research or assessment
  • Experience developing Tableau dashboards and other data visualization products
  • Experience evaluating educational programs using causal or quasi-experimental methods

Pay Grade: 56T
Typical Starting Pay: $118,500 - $154,000
The actual compensation offered will take into consideration internal equity and may vary based on the candidate's job-related experience, knowledge, skills, and other relevant factors. Candidates with very significant work-related experience may receive an offer higher than the posted typical range.
