What is a Data Science Product Manager?

A Data Science Product Manager is a professional who bridges the gap between data science teams and business objectives by guiding the development of data-driven products. They work closely with data scientists, engineers, and stakeholders to define product vision, prioritize features, and ensure successful product delivery. Their role involves understanding both the technical aspects of machine learning and analytics as well as user needs and business strategy. This ensures that data-powered products are effective, user-focused, and aligned with organizational goals.

What is the hottest job of the 21st century?

Data Science Product Managers are among the most in-demand roles in the 21st century, combining skills in data analysis, product development, and strategic planning. They oversee data-driven products and require knowledge of tools like SQL, Python, and machine learning, often working in fast-paced tech environments. The role is expected to grow as organizations increasingly rely on data to make decisions.

Is 40 too late for data science?

A Data Science Product Manager can enter the field at age 40, as experience, domain knowledge, and skills like programming and statistical analysis are highly valued. Many professionals transition into data science roles later in their careers, and continuous learning through certifications or courses can facilitate this shift. Age is less important than relevant skills and experience in the data science industry.

Can data scientists make $300k?

Data science product managers and senior data scientists with extensive experience, specialized skills, and working in high-cost-of-living areas can earn salaries of $300,000 or more. Achieving this level often requires advanced knowledge of machine learning, strong business acumen, and leadership responsibilities, along with experience at top companies or in executive roles.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Data Science Product Manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Data Science Product Manager, you need a strong background in product management, data analytics, and a foundational understanding of machine learning, often supported by a degree in a technical or quantitative field. Familiarity with tools like SQL, Python, JIRA, and knowledge of data platforms and agile methodologies is typically required. Excellent communication, strategic thinking, and the ability to bridge technical and non-technical teams are vital soft skills. These competencies ensure successful product development, effective stakeholder alignment, and the delivery of impactful data-driven solutions.

A Data Science Product Manager plays a crucial role in bridging the gap between business objectives and technical teams. Throughout the product lifecycle, they work closely with data scientists to define project goals, prioritize features, and translate business needs into actionable data-driven solutions. They also coordinate with engineers to ensure the seamless integration of machine learning models into products, address technical constraints, and facilitate communication between cross-functional teams. This collaborative approach ensures that data science initiatives are both technically feasible and aligned with overall business strategy.

Can a data scientist be a product manager?

A data scientist can transition to a product manager role, especially if they develop skills in project management, user experience, and business strategy. Job description

Lucid Software is the leader in visual collaboration, helping teams see and build the future from idea to reality. Our products, business, and workplace culture have received numerous awards, such as being named to the Forbes Cloud 100 and a Fortune Best Workplace in Technology. Lucid is a hybrid workplace, allowing employees to work remotely, from one of our offices, or a combination of the two depending on the needs of the role and team. At Lucid, we hold true to our core values of teamwork over ego, innovation in everything we do, individual empowerment, initiative, and ownership, and passion and excellence in every area. We value diversity and are dedicated to creating an environment that is respectful and inclusive for everyone.
We are looking for a Senior Product Manager to help us take our products to the next level by leveraging cutting-edge Artificial Intelligence. Are you a natural leader and a great teammate? Do you have a passion for elegant solutions, user experiences, and the massive potential of Generative AI? Are you drawn to work that is different every single day? If this is you, let's talk!
This Senior PM will join a team focused on innovation and new product discovery, particularly in the area of emerging technology and AI. You will be joining a vibrant team of PM's that work on a variety of projects including bringing Lucid's Collaborative AI products, agentic workflows, and canvas-native generative features to market; rapid prototyping and derisking for new, visual-first experiences; and continuing to build out the underlying innovative technical AI platform that makes it all possible. On that team, you'll lead our AI platform and evaluation in partnership with our AI leadership group.
Responsibilities:
  • Partner with product teams to identify, test, and de-risk new AI capabilities, rapidly validating customer value through prototypes, experiments, and iterative learning.
  • Help shape how Lucid builds AI products by improving our product development process, evaluation strategy, and experimentation practices to support fast, high-confidence decision making.
  • Stay at the forefront of modern AI, agentic systems, and developer tooling, bringing new technologies and approaches into product strategy where they create meaningful customer value.
  • Develop deep customer expertise by understanding how people think, collaborate, and solve problems visually, then translate those insights into AI experiences that feel natural, useful, and trustworthy.
  • Own AI platform capabilities & Evals from strategy through launch, working closely with Engineering, Design, Data Science, and Product teams to deliver scalable foundations that enable innovation across the organization.
Requirements:
  • 4+ years of product management experience building successful B2B SaaS products, with a track record of leading complex, cross-functional initiatives from concept through launch.
  • Experience bringing agentic AI products and capabilities to market, operating in fast-moving, ambiguous environments where customer needs, models, and technology evolve rapidly.
  • Strong understanding of modern AI systems, including agent architectures, tool use, retrieval-augmented generation (RAG), AI evaluations, and the tradeoffs between quality, latency, reliability, and cost.
  • Exceptional product judgment, with the ability to identify emerging technology opportunities, prioritize customer problems, and influence technical and business stakeholders across the organization.
  • Proven ability to build strong partnerships across Engineering, Design, Data Science, Product, and Go-to-Market teams to deliver high-impact customer experiences.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Direct experience leading innovation or new product discovery teams, especially in the areas of rapid learning, AI iteration, and derisking non-deterministic features
  • Experience with visual collaboration, spatial computing, or digital whiteboarding platforms
  • Experience mentoring other PMs on AI product lifecycle best practices
