What is a data migration lead?

A Data Migration Lead is a professional responsible for overseeing and coordinating the process of transferring data from one system or storage environment to another. This role involves planning migration strategies, ensuring data integrity, and managing risks throughout the transition. The Data Migration Lead works closely with technical teams, stakeholders, and business users to ensure that data is accurately and securely moved while minimizing downtime and disruption. They also play a crucial role in troubleshooting issues and validating successful data transfers.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a data migration lead?

To thrive as a Data Migration Lead, you need expertise in data analysis, database management, and project leadership, often supported by a degree in information technology or computer science. Familiarity with ETL tools (like Informatica or Talend), cloud platforms, data mapping, and sometimes certifications in data management or specific technologies is typical. Strong problem-solving, attention to detail, and communication skills help coordinate teams and manage stakeholder expectations. These capabilities are crucial to ensure accurate, efficient, and secure data transfers that support business continuity.
