What is the difference between Data Engineer vs Data Scientist?

AspectData EngineerData Scientist
Primary FocusBuilding and maintaining data pipelines and infrastructureAnalyzing data to extract insights and create models
SkillsSQL, ETL, programming (Python, Java), database managementStatistics, machine learning, data analysis, programming (Python, R)
Work EnvironmentData warehouses, cloud platforms, backend systemsData analysis environments, research labs, visualization tools
Common ToolsApache Spark, Hadoop, Airflow, SQLJupyter, RStudio, Tableau, scikit-learn

Data Engineers focus on creating and maintaining the infrastructure that allows data to be collected, stored, and processed efficiently. Data Scientists analyze this data to generate insights, build predictive models, and support decision-making. While their skills overlap, Data Engineers are more involved in data pipeline development, whereas Data Scientists focus on data analysis and modeling.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Data Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Data Engineer, you need a strong background in computer science, data modeling, and programming languages such as Python or Java, often coupled with a relevant degree. Familiarity with ETL tools, big data frameworks (like Hadoop or Spark), and cloud platforms (such as AWS or Azure) is typically required, along with certifications like AWS Certified Data Analytics. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective communication set exceptional data engineers apart. These skills and qualities are essential for building robust data pipelines, ensuring data quality, and supporting data-driven decision-making across organizations.

What Does a Data Engineer Do?

The job duties of a data engineer involve helping with the development of systems, software, and infrastructure used to process, store and analyze data. Your responsibilities in this career include working to install data management software. Your employer may expect you to perform maintenance and install updates to all software and systems that they use for data acquisition, management, and analysis. Data engineers also analyze existing data systems to find ways to improve efficiency and accessibility. You then suggest upgrades or changes based on your assessment.

What are Data Engineers?

Data Engineers are IT professionals who design, construct, install, and maintain large-scale processing systems and other infrastructure for collecting, storing, and analyzing data. They build and optimize data pipelines and architectures that allow organizations to efficiently access and use data for business insights. Data Engineers work closely with data scientists, analysts, and other stakeholders to ensure that data is reliable, accessible, and secure. Their responsibilities often include working with databases, cloud platforms, and big data tools.

How do Data Engineers typically collaborate with Data Scientists and Analysts within an organization?

Data Engineers play a crucial role in ensuring that Data Scientists and Analysts have reliable, well-structured data for their projects. This collaboration often involves building and maintaining data pipelines, optimizing data storage solutions, and troubleshooting data quality issues. Regular communication and agile teamwork are common, with Data Engineers frequently participating in meetings to understand analytical requirements and adjust data processes accordingly. By working closely together, these teams can quickly iterate on data models and deliver actionable insights to drive business decisions.

This role requires working closely with data teams, frequently in a matrixed environment as part of a broader project team. The culture of the organization places an emphasis on teamwork, so social and interpersonal skills are equally important as technical capability. Due to the emerging and fast-evolving nature of GCP technology and practice, the position requires being well-informed of technological advancements and proficiency placing new innovations into effective practice.
As a Staff Data Engineer, you will collaborate closely with all team members to create a modular, scalable solution that addresses current needs, but will also serve as a foundation for future success. The position will be critical in building the team’s engineering practices in test driven development, continuous integration, and automated deployment and is a hands-on team member who actively coaches the team to solve complex problems.
In addition, this position requires a candidate who can analyze business requirements, perform design tasks, construct, test, and implement solutions with minimal supervision. This candidate will have a record of successful project accomplishments in a fast-paced, mixed team (consultant and employee) environment.
The primary responsibility of this position is to implement and scale best practices of processing multimodal data including images, documents, unstructured text, and sensor data. Experience with multimodal data is a must for this role and should be demonstrated through prior projects.

What You'll Do:

  • Develop, maintain, and optimize streaming, near real-time, and batch GCP data pipelines for enterprise-wise analysis of structured, semi-structured, and unstructured data.
  • Collaborate closely with the Lead Architect and Product Owner to define, design, and build new features and improve existing data products.
  • Lead, contribute, and participate in peer code reviews.
  • Participate in on-call support rotation.
  • Adhere to established development guidelines.
  • Translate business requirements into technical design specifications.
  • Mentor other Data Engineer colleagues.
  • Work with Project Managers to estimate, establish, and meet target dates.
  • Work independently, and complete tasks on-schedule by exercising strong judgment and critical thinking skills.
  • Create and maintain technical documentation, including source-to-target mappings, job scheduling and dependency details, and business-driven transformation rules.
  • Lead and participate in the deployment, change, configuration, management, administration, and maintenance of deployment processes and systems.
  • Lead and contribute to technical group discussions to adopt innovative technologies, improve development practices, and reduce technical debt.
  • Parse and structure multimodal datasets using AI and other cloud services
What qualifications you will need:
  • Bachelor's degree preferred
  • 7+ years of experience in Data Warehouse ETL/ELT Data Engineering required
  • 3+ years of experience in Google Cloud Platform (GCP) Data Engineering preferred
  • 3+ years of experience in Healthcare IT preferred
  • Experience with Google Cloud Storage (GCS), BigQuery, and Cloud Composer (Airflow), Cloud Functions, Dataflow, and Dataproc GCP services.
  • Experience writing optimized BigQuery SQL transformation queries and scripts.
  • Experience with raw data formats such as JSON, Avro, and Parquet
  • Experience with Oracle, SQL Server, Teradata, and other database platforms.
  • Experience writing and maintaining Unix/Linux and Python scripts.
  • Experience with GitHub source control and CI/CD workflows.
  • Knowledge of issue tracking tools such as Jira and ServiceNow.
  • Ability to troubleshoot, maintain, reverse engineer, and optimize existing data pipelines.
  • Ability to analyze and interpret complex data and offer solutions to complex problems.
  • Ability to work independently on assigned tasks.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to explain complex technical issues in a way that non-technical people may understand.
  • Excellent problem-solving and critical thinking skills.
  • Hands on experience parsing documents and storing data in a structured format
  • Experience with unstructured data
  • Knowledge of IT governance and operations.
