What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Data Systems Analyst, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Data Systems Analyst, you need strong analytical abilities, data management expertise, and a relevant degree in computer science, information systems, or a related field. Familiarity with database management systems (e.g., SQL Server, Oracle), data visualization tools (e.g., Tableau, Power BI), and sometimes certifications like Certified Data Management Professional (CDMP) are valuable. Excellent problem-solving, attention to detail, and effective communication are key soft skills for translating business requirements into technical solutions. These skills ensure accurate data analysis, system optimization, and successful collaboration between IT and business stakeholders.

What is the difference between Data Systems Analyst vs Data Analyst?

While both roles work with data, Data Systems Analysts focus on building and maintaining data infrastructure, whereas Data Analysts interpret data to support decision-making. Understanding these differences helps in choosing the right career path or job role.

What are the most common challenges Data Systems Analysts face when integrating new data sources?

Data Systems Analysts often encounter challenges such as data incompatibility, inconsistent formats, and incomplete documentation when integrating new data sources. Addressing these issues typically requires close collaboration with data engineers and source system owners to ensure proper data mapping and validation. Additionally, analysts must be vigilant about data security and compliance requirements during integration. Developing robust ETL (extract, transform, load) processes and thorough testing are essential for successful integration and ongoing reliability.

What are the top 3 skills for a data analyst?

A data systems analyst needs strong analytical skills to interpret complex data, proficiency in programming languages like SQL and Python for data manipulation, and expertise in data visualization tools such as Tableau or Power BI to communicate insights effectively. Additionally, attention to detail and understanding of database management are essential for success in this role.

What is a Data Systems Analyst?

A Data Systems Analyst is a professional who designs, implements, and maintains data systems to help organizations collect, process, and analyze information efficiently. They work closely with both technical and business teams to ensure that data systems meet organizational needs and support decision-making. Their responsibilities often include analyzing data flows, optimizing database performance, and troubleshooting issues. Data Systems Analysts also help ensure data integrity, security, and compliance with regulations.

Is a data analyst well paid?

Data analysts are generally well compensated, with salaries varying based on experience, location, and industry. Entry-level positions typically start around industry-standard rates, while experienced analysts with skills in SQL, Excel, and data visualization tools can earn higher salaries. Certifications and advanced skills can also contribute to increased pay.

What does a data systems analyst do?

A data systems analyst evaluates and manages an organization’s data systems to ensure efficient data collection, storage, and retrieval. They analyze data workflows, troubleshoot system issues, and often use tools like SQL and data visualization software to support decision-making and improve data processes.

Is AI replacing data analysts?

AI tools are automating certain data processing and analysis tasks, but the role of a Data Systems Analyst involves interpreting complex data, designing systems, and making strategic decisions that require human judgment. AI is a complement to these skills, enabling analysts to focus on higher-level analysis and insights rather than replacing the entire role.

Job description

Data Systems Analyst
Job no: 495547
Work type: Staff Part-Time
Location: Baton Rouge, LA
Categories: Adult Education, Data & Development, Information Technology
THIS IS NOT A REMOTE POSITION.
Louisiana Adult Education operates a distinct and complex data environment in its role as a state agency, federal reporting authority under WIOA Title II, and issuer of high school equivalency credentials. The program's Student Information System (SIS) and its network of integrated systems require sustained technical attention as the program evaluates structural changes - including potential migration to Ellucian Banner or a hybrid systems approach - under the direction of LCTC leadership.
This part-time position will work at the intersection of IT and adult education program operations to clean up existing SIS data tables, document current data architecture, and prepare the systems environment for informed decision-making by LCTC leadership. The role does not carry policy or reporting authority but provides essential technical capacity that does not currently exist within the Adult Education or IT teams.
College: LCTC System
Department: Education
Sub department: Institutional Research and Planning
Type of Appointment: Part time - Temporary
Salary: Salary will be commensurate with education and experience
Duties and Responsibilities:
SIS Data Cleanup and Quality Remediation
• Audit existing SIS tables for data quality issues, including duplicate records, missing fields, invalid entries, and classification errors
• Work with the State Director and program staff to understand data definitions and federal reporting requirements (NRS, WIOA Title II)
• Execute systematic corrections to student, provider, site, and staff tables in accordance with state policy
• Document all changes made, including before/after states and justification
• Flag records that require policy-level decisions for escalation to the State Director
Systems Documentation
• Produce written documentation of current SIS data architecture, including table structures, field definitions, and data relationships
• Map existing integrations between the SIS and external systems (HSE Data Hub, HSE Connect, ApplicationXtender, NSC, LWC, SWIS, and the WorkReady U intake portal)
• Document import schedules, data flow logic, and known failure points
• Identify undocumented dependencies or institutional knowledge gaps that present continuity risk
Pre-Migration Readiness Analysis
• Assess current SIS data against potential receiving environments (Banner or other platforms) to identify structural incompatibilities
• Produce a gap analysis documenting AE-specific data elements, reporting logic, and workflows not natively supported in Banner
• Support the State Director in preparing materials for LCTC leadership regarding the technical complexity of any proposed migration
• Identify which systems and functions must remain under Adult Education state authority regardless of platform changes
IT Coordination
• Serve as the primary liaison between the Adult Education program and LCTC IT on data-related work
• Coordinate with IT on import processes, scheduled jobs, and system-level access needed for cleanup activities
• Participate in planning discussions with LCTC IT office as directed by the State Director
• Escalate technical failures or system-level issues promptly with clear documentation
• Other duties as assigned
Required Experience:
• Experience working with relational databases or student information systems
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
• Proficiency in SQL or comparable data query tools
• Ability to read and interpret data documentation, field definitions, and system logic
• Strong written communication skills - this role produces documentation, not just analysis
• Ability to work independently with minimal supervision while maintaining clear communication with the State Director
• Proficiency in SQL or structured data query tools with demonstrated ability to identify and resolve data quality issues
• Ability to produce clear, organized technical documentation suitable for both technical and non-technical audiences
• Must be able to work in a fast-paced environment with demonstrated ability to manage competing demands and frequent change
• Strong analytical skills with experience identifying data patterns, inconsistencies, and systemic issues across large datasets
• Effective communication with IT staff, program leadership, and external stakeholders on complex technical matters
Preferred Experience:
• Experience with Ellucian Banner or comparable higher education ERP systems
• Prior experience supporting system migrations or data conversion projects
• Experience with ApplicationXtender or document management systems
Preferred Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
• Familiarity with adult education, workforce development, or federal grant-funded programs
• Knowledge of NRS, WIOA Title II, or related federal reporting frameworks
Benefits: As a member of the Louisiana Community and Technical College System, LCTC System has an attractive benefits package with a wide variety of benefit options. Benefits offered include retirement, multiple medical insurance options, supplemental insurances (dental, term life, disability, accident, vision, etc.), Tax Saver Flexible Benefits Plan (saves tax dollars on some child care and medical expenses), holidays (14 per year, typically includes longer break at Christmas), generous annual (vacation) and sick leave benefits and Employee Assistance Program. Specific benefits depend on job category, percent effort and length of employment.
Application Deadline: Applications will be accepted and position will remain open until filled.
Application Instructions:
Applicants for this position should submit a cover letter that addresses the outlined responsibilities, a resume, and the names and contact information for three professional/work-related references.
*If selected, applicant will be asked to provide a certified copy of transcript prior to employment start date if it is needed to qualify for the position.
In accordance with LCTC Policy #6.036, a criminal history check will be conducted on all new hires. LCTC participates in the federal E-Verify system for identification and employment eligibility purposes. LCTC is a State As a Model Employer (SAME) agency that supports improved employment opportunities for individuals with disabilities.
