Job description

The Data Management - Vendor Data Engineering team at BlueCross BlueShield of Tennessee is hiring an Associate Data Engineer I to support the development and maintenance of data pipelines that power critical vendor integrations and analytics workflows. This role is ideal for candidates with a foundation in SQL andPython who want to build hands-on experience designing, testing, and troubleshooting data pipelines, supporting data warehouse structures, and resolving data quality issues.
In this role, you will partner closely with data engineers, business analysts, and stakeholders to deliver reliable, scalable data solutions while learning modern cloud platforms such as Google Cloud and BigQuery. This position includes collaboration across teams and participation in an on-call rotation, offering strong mentorship and growth opportunities toward more advanced engineering roles.
Notes:
  • On-call rotation is required for this position, starting approximately 6 months into the role.
  • While this is a remote, work from home position, the final round of interviews will take place onsite in our Chattanooga, TN office.
  • Sponsorship is unavailable for this role.

Job Responsibilities

  • Formulates and defines system scope and objectives through research and fact-finding to design, develop, modify, or integrate information systems
  • Devises or modifies application systems and procedures to optimize functional requirements including capacity, operating time, response time, and form of desired results.
  • Designs, codes, tests, debugs, and documents programs, subroutines, and scripts.
  • Maintains technical skill set for software languages, databases, platforms, operating systems, utilities and networks needed to support work assignments.
  • Responds to system failures and performance events by taking appropriate measures to reduce system downtime and eliminate recurrence of problems.
  • May conduct presentations to provide end users with knowledge to maximize their use of developed systems.

  • Bachelors Degree in Computer Science (or related field) or equivalent work experience required. Equivalent years of experience are determined as one year of technical experience for every year of college requested.
