Job description

Data Engineer

Data Engineer will collaborate with stakeholders across the organization to assist with specific ad-hoc database requests (i.e., assembling large, complex data sets that meet functional / non-functional business requirements), implement internal process improvements, build infrastructure required for data transformation, provide actionable data-based insights into efficiency improvement and work across partners to assist with data related technical issues. Data Engineer will contribute to administrative data initiatives through optimizing and transforming data and databases. Resource will perform the following duties:

Data engineering and transformation – Data Engineer will represent Department and Agency through analytical data activities designed to support internal and external stakeholders, including, but not limited to: Department of Labor and Economic Opportunity and various divisions under Unemployment Insurance Agency.

  • Communicate with customer as needed throughout process to refine data engineering targets.
  • Collaborate with stakeholders across the organization to assist with specific ad-hoc database requests.
  • Design research process, identifying appropriate data sources.
  • Conduct research and produce analysis, automation, and insights.
  • Demonstrate service excellence by providing high quality results that meet or exceed department expectations.

Process improvement and reporting – Data Engineer will contribute significantly to identify, design, and implement internal process improvements, automating manual processes, optimizing data delivery, re-designing infrastructure for greater scalability, etc.

  • Collaborate with partners in state departments/agencies.
  • Meet regularly with customers in LEO, DTMB, and the Governor’s Office to ensure customer needs are being meet.
  • Gather data from various internal and external sources.
  • Present reports, tools, and data as requested or required.

Contribute to Agency analytical tools and products – Data Engineer will actively participate in workgroups with other staff in the design, development, and production of analytical tools and internal products. Products may include evaluations of current backlog in Fraud and Benefits division under UIA as well as those developed to support other internal or external customers.

  • Collaborate with other Bureau data engineers and analysts.
  • Determine the most appropriate methods to present findings to meet customer’s need and deliver the product.
  • Build analytics tools that utilize the data pipeline to provide actionable insights into operational efficiency and other key business performance metrics.
  • Demonstrate Customer Service Excellence by providing high quality results that meet or exceed agency and customer expectations.

Knowledge: Working SQL knowledge and experience working with relational databases, query authoring (SQL) as well as working familiarity with a variety of databases.

  • Experience with building dashboards in Tableau, BI, PowerPoint, and Excel is preferred
  • Experience performing root cause analysis on internal and external data and processes to answer specific business questions and identify opportunities for improvement.
  • Strong analytic skills related to working with unstructured datasets.
  • A successful history of manipulating, processing, and extracting value from large, disconnected datasets.
  • Strong project management and organizational skills.
  • Experience supporting and working with cross-functional teams in a dynamic environment.
