Is 30 too old to get into consulting?

Data consulting is a field open to professionals of various ages, and starting at 30 is common. Success depends on relevant skills, experience, and certifications like data analysis tools or programming languages, rather than age alone.

What is the difference between Data Consulting vs Data Analysis?

AspectData ConsultingData Analysis
Required CredentialsTypically requires a degree in business, data science, or related fields; certifications like CBIP or CDMP are commonUsually requires a degree in statistics, mathematics, or related fields; certifications like CAP or Microsoft Data Analyst are beneficial
Work EnvironmentConsultants often work with multiple clients across industries, providing strategic advice and solutionsAnalysts generally work within organizations, focusing on interpreting data to inform business decisions
Employer & Industry UsageConsulting firms, large corporations, and agenciesCorporations, research institutions, and data-driven departments

Data Consulting involves advising organizations on data strategies, architecture, and solutions, often across multiple clients. Data Analysis focuses on examining data sets to uncover insights and support decision-making within a specific organization. While both roles require strong analytical skills, Data Consulting emphasizes strategic guidance, whereas Data Analysis centers on data interpretation and reporting.

What is data consulting?

Data consulting is a professional service that helps organizations leverage data to make informed decisions, optimize operations, and drive business growth. Data consultants analyze existing data systems, recommend strategies for data collection and management, and help implement analytics tools. They often assist with data visualization, reporting, and ensuring regulatory compliance. Their expertise enables companies to turn raw data into actionable insights, improving efficiency and competitiveness.

How do data consultants typically collaborate with clients and internal teams during a project?

Data consultants frequently work in close partnership with both clients and internal stakeholders to identify business challenges, define project objectives, and design effective data-driven solutions. This often involves regular meetings to understand client needs, ongoing communication with data engineers or analysts, and presenting actionable insights in a clear, non-technical manner. Collaboration is key, as consultants must translate complex data findings into strategies that align with the client's goals while ensuring alignment across technical and business teams. The role requires strong interpersonal and project management skills to keep projects on track and deliver measurable value.

Is 40 too late for data science?

Data consulting and data science roles do not have strict age limits; many professionals start or transition into the field later in life. Success depends on acquiring relevant skills such as programming, statistics, and tools like Python or SQL, along with experience and continuous learning. Age should not be a barrier if you build a strong skill set and stay current with industry developments.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Data Consultant, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Data Consultant, you need expertise in data analysis, data modeling, and a solid understanding of business intelligence, often supported by a degree in a quantitative field. Proficiency with tools such as SQL, Python, data visualization platforms (like Tableau or Power BI), and familiarity with data governance frameworks are typically required. Strong communication, problem-solving, and client management skills set standout consultants apart. These competencies are crucial to effectively translate complex data into actionable insights and drive strategic decision-making for clients.

What does a data consultant do?

A data consultant analyzes and interprets data to help organizations make informed decisions. They often work with data management tools, develop data models, and provide strategic recommendations based on data insights. Strong analytical skills and knowledge of data visualization and database systems are essential for this role.

Job description

Improve how the world builds software by bringing craftsmanship to data

Test Double is building a data practice, and we're looking for a Principal Data Consultant to lead the technical work at its center. We believe durable data systems are built with the same craftsmanship as durable software, and we're looking for someone who has put that belief into practice on real client engagements.

This is a hands-on role where you'll lead client data engagements, mentor consultants into capable data practitioners, and help shape our evolving practice. You'll partner with our sales and solutions teams, who lead business development, while you focus on delivery quality, technical credibility, and growing capability across the organization.

As the practice matures, you'll help shape its direction, lead our most complex client engagements, and establish Test Double's reputation in the data space.

Our Approach to AI
We use AI to meaningfully improve how software and data platforms are designed, built, and delivered. We exercise judgment in when and how to apply it, balancing speed, quality, reliability, and maintainability.
We produce work that meets a high bar, can explain our approach, and adapt as tools and practices evolve. We help teams adopt AI effectively by shaping patterns, practices, and standards that improve outcomes over time.

Our Team Culture
As a 100% employee-owned company operating remotely since 2011, we have over 120 consultants across the United States and Canada. We support clients through challenging situations while fostering engaged, collaborative teams, balancing pragmatism in delivery with a commitment to quality. We encourage one another by sharing ideas, approaches, and feedback that help people learn and grow. We communicate openly and honestly, building trust with clients, strengthening teams, and supporting our fellow Double Agents.

Your mission as a Principal Data Consultant

Lead the technical work on client data engagements
Take ownership of client data work across architecture, pipelines, analytics, and orchestration. You deliver pragmatic, incremental improvements that create momentum instead of big- bang transformations. You help clients build scalable, observable, and durable data systems and engineering practices they can sustain long after our engagement ends.

Drive strategic transformation on our most challenging engagements
Lead complex data initiatives that other consultancies struggle to deliver. From modernizing legacy data warehouses and guiding platform migrations to designing analytics and lakehouse platforms from zero to one, consolidating fragmented data ecosystems, and establishing AI-ready foundations, you'll solve problems that haven't been solved before.

Set a high bar for trustworthy data
Bring clear, well-reasoned opinions on testing, reliability, and maintainability. The data foundations you build should hold up over time and give clients something they can actually trust their AI and their decisions to.

Develop the next generation of data practitioners
Mentor and guide our consultants through structured coaching that elevates their technical capabilities and client relationship skills.

Help shape what the practice offers
Identify patterns across engagements and turn them into reusable tooling, processes, and documented service offerings. You will help define and evolve Test Double's data consulting practice, informed by real client work and strong opinions on architecture, governance, modeling, observability, and delivery.

Partner with clients as a strategic advisor
Provide executive-level consulting to client leadership, helping them navigate digital transformation challenges and align technology initiatives with business objectives. You'll influence organizational change at scale while maintaining hands-on technical involvement.

Support revenue growth through authentic relationships
Partner with our demand generation team on sales calls, proposal development, and relationship building that authentically represents our values. You'll help prospects understand how Test Double's approach differs from traditional consultancies while establishing trust in our capabilities.

Expand Test Double's strategic market presence
Establish our reputation in the data space through thoughtful content creation, conference presentations, and innovative tooling that demonstrates our capabilities. Your thought leadership will directly contribute to our ability to serve strategic markets and attract exceptional talent.

What you bring to Test Double

Software engineering roots
You have built and maintained production software, not only data pipelines. This is a hard requirement.

Depth across the modern data stack
You are a generalist with opinionated, well-reasoned defaults: hands-on with dbt, Python, SQL, a major cloud warehouse such as Snowflake, Databricks, or BigQuery, and orchestration with Dagster or Airflow. You have strong views on data testing and what good looks like.

A track record of growing other engineers
You have concrete examples of developing engineers and consultants through feedback, coaching, and support. You thrive when the people around you get better.

Client consulting experience
You have earned client trust through client-facing or consulting work, and you understand how to navigate a client organization, influence stakeholders, and tie technical work to business outcomes.

Comfort building something new
You work well through ambiguity and can shape something with limited scaffolding. A practice in its early days is exactly the environment you want.

Alignment with Test Double's values
You are empathetic, humble, and committed to continuous improvement, and you do your best work in an inclusive environment where everyone's contributions are encouraged.
