As a data architect, your job duties include the design of data models, the development of data storage systems, and overall data management. Your job requires experience with various software and computer programming languages, systems, and utilities, such as SQL, Oracle, and BusinessObjects, Hadoop, big data systems, data warehousing, and ETL (extract, transform, load). Additional qualifications for this career include excellent problem-solving skills.

How does a data architect typically collaborate with other IT and business teams during a data infrastructure project?

Data Architects play a central role in bridging technical teams and business stakeholders. They work closely with database administrators, data engineers, and software developers to design robust and scalable data solutions. Additionally, Data Architects often consult with business analysts and project managers to ensure that the data infrastructure aligns with organizational goals and regulatory requirements. Regular meetings and clear documentation are common practices to facilitate effective communication and ensure project success.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a data architect, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Data Architect, you need a strong background in data modeling, database design, and systems architecture, typically supported by a degree in computer science or a related field. Expertise with tools and technologies such as SQL, NoSQL, ETL processes, data warehousing platforms, and certifications like AWS Certified Data Analytics or Google Professional Data Engineer are highly valued. Strong problem-solving, communication, and project management skills help you translate business needs into scalable technical solutions and collaborate across teams. These skills ensure robust, efficient data infrastructure that supports accurate analytics and informed decision-making for the organization.

What is the difference between Data Architect vs Data Engineer?

Job description

About This Role
As PDK continues to grow, the amount of data generated across our systems, products, and operations is increasing rapidly. Turning that data into reliable insights requires a modern, scalable data platform.
We are looking for an experienced Data Architect to help design and build the systems that power analytics across the company. In this role, you will transform raw operational data into well-structured datasets that enable reporting, product insights, and better decision-making.
You'll work closely with our engineering and analytics teams to build robust pipelines, define warehouse models, and ensure our data platform is reliable, scalable, and built for the future.
If you enjoy solving data infrastructure problems and building systems that enable an entire organization to move faster with data, this role is for you.
What You'll Build
As a Data Architect at PDK, you will help design and maintain the core systems that move, transform, and organize data across the company.
This includes:
  • Designing, building, and maintaining scalable data pipelines that ingest unstructured event data from internal product and engineering databases into our Snowflake data warehouse
  • Designing data models and schemas that support analytics and reporting
  • Developing ETL/ELT workflows using Python, Airflow, and Fivetran
  • Ensuring data pipelines are reliable, observable, and well-tested
  • Maintaining and optimizing our Snowflake data warehouse
  • Integrating new data sources across product, operations, and business systems
  • Improving data quality, documentation, and governance across the platform

Your work will directly support teams across the company by ensuring the data they rely on is accurate, accessible, and scalable.
Our Data Stack
Our data platform uses a modern cloud data stack, including:
  • Snowflake for our data warehouse
  • Google Cloud Platform (GCP) for storage and data services
  • Airflow for pipeline orchestration
  • Fivetran for data ingestion
  • dbt for transformations and modeling
  • Python and SQL for pipeline and transformation logic
  • GitHub for version control and collaboration

You will play an important role in evolving this platform and improving how we build and operate data systems. You do not need experience with every tool listed here to apply. If you have strong fundamentals in data engineering and cloud platforms, we encourage you to apply.
Qualifications
Applicants must be legally authorized to work in the United States.
We are not able to provide sponsorship for employment visa status now or in the future.
This position does not offer relocation assistance; candidates must be located locally or able to relocate at their own expense prior to the start date.
What We're Looking For
  • 3-5 years of experience in a Data Engineer, Software Engineer, or similar role
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent in the field of Computer Science, Statistics, Information Technology, or related field
  • Strong experience with SQL, Javascript/Typescript and Python
  • Experience analyzing, managing, and organizing unstructured data from a variety of platforms
  • Experience working with and managing modern cloud data warehouses such as Snowflake
  • Experience building pipelines using Airflow or similar orchestration tools
  • Experience working with cloud platforms such as GCP, AWS, or Azure
  • Strong understanding of data modeling and ETL/ELT practices
  • Experience integrating data from systems such as relational databases, APIs, or event streams
  • A focus on data reliability, testing, and maintainability
  • Strong communication skills and ability to collaborate across teams

Nice to Have
  • Experience in a first Data Engineer / greenfield data infrastructure role, comfortable making architectural decisions without established precedent
  • Familiarity with access control, physical security, or IoT/device event data, understanding of time-series event data and device telemetry is a plus
  • Experience using dbt for data transformation and modeling
  • Familiarity with event-driven or message-based systems (RabbitMQ, Pub/Sub, Kafka, etc.)
  • Experience working with BI tools such as Tableau or Power BI

Why Data Professionals Like Working at PDK
  • You will hold a high-impact, foundational role where your work will directly shape the company's data capabilities
  • Your work will have visible impact across the organization
  • You'll collaborate with engineers, analysts, and product teams
