Are you the person who can spot an out-of-tolerance cut by sound alone? In Derby, KS, we’re seeking an Advanced Setup Machinist to own projects from print to finished assembly across multiple shifts in a fast-paced environment.

Imagine This

You open a router packet, translate complex drawings and sketches, and map out dimensions, tolerances, operation order, and setup needs. You lay out the stock with precise scribe lines, secure fixtures and tooling—sometimes improvising with risers or angle plates—and set the right speeds, feeds, coolant, and cut geometry. A trial run confirms your setup and programmed data, and you watch the machine closely, making smart adjustments to prevent drift or defects. While it’s cutting, you’re already reviewing the next job’s programs, setup sheets, and tool lists to stay a step ahead.

Your Impact
  • Turn blueprints, manuals, specifications, and sample parts into accurate work plans and setups.
  • Measure, mark, and scribe reference points to guide subsequent machining.
  • Select, align, and secure fixtures, cutting tools, attachments, accessories, and materials; invent setups when needed.
  • Regulate machining factors—speed, feed, coolant flow, depth or angle of cut—or edit CNC control media.
  • Monitor operations to predict or detect malfunctions or tolerance issues and adjust controls/programs as required.
  • Use precision instruments to confirm parts meet print/router requirements; request first-article checks on multi-piece runs.
  • Set up and execute trial runs to validate settings, tooling, and programs.
  • Stay organized by preparing the next project’s routers, programs, setup sheets, and tool sheets while the current job runs.
  • Fit and assemble components into complete units using jigs, fixtures, surface plate/table methods, and hand/power tools.
  • Verify alignment and dimensions with micrometers, height gages, and gauge blocks.
  • Enter accurate data into the labor collection system.
  • Keep your machine and workcell clean every day.
  • Occasionally install machined replacement parts in equipment and test performance under maintenance direction.
  • When needed, derive simple specifications from general descriptions and produce a basic sketch for fabrication.
  • Conduct routine maintenance and troubleshoot to sustain top machine performance.
  • Collaborate with peers to streamline processes and elevate throughput.
Qualifications
  • At least four years of trade school, vocational training, or apprenticeship.
  • Specialized experience with specific materials, products, precision levels, machining processes, or particular machine types/trade names.
  • Five or more years of machining experience.
  • Proficient with both CNC and manual machines.
  • Thorough knowledge of machining practices, tooling, and materials.
  • Fluent in reading technical documents and blueprints.
  • Strong attention to detail and quality.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills; effective independently and with a team.
