What is a dance therapy internship?

A Dance Therapy Internship provides hands-on experience in using movement and dance as therapeutic tools to support individuals' emotional, mental, and physical well-being. Interns typically work under the supervision of a licensed dance/movement therapist in clinical, educational, or community settings. Responsibilities may include assisting with therapy sessions, observing client progress, and learning therapeutic techniques. These internships help students or aspiring professionals gain practical experience and fulfill academic or certification requirements in dance/movement therapy.

What does a dance therapy intern do?

As a Dance Therapy Intern, your day often includes assisting lead therapists with group or individual sessions, preparing session materials, and observing client progress. You may also spend time journaling or documenting sessions, collaborating with clinical supervisors, and participating in team meetings or case discussions. Tasks can vary based on the setting—such as hospitals, schools, or community centers—but usually involve direct interaction with clients under close supervision. This hands-on approach provides valuable real-world experience and opportunities to practice and develop clinical and movement-based skills.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in a dance therapy internship?

To thrive in a Dance Therapy Internship, you typically need a background in dance or movement studies, knowledge of basic therapeutic techniques, and enrollment in or completion of a relevant educational program such as dance/movement therapy. Familiarity with documentation practices, observation tools, and sometimes CPR/first aid certification are commonly expected. Outstanding interns demonstrate empathy, active listening, creativity, and strong interpersonal communication skills. These abilities are crucial for building rapport with clients, effectively supporting therapeutic goals, and contributing positively within multidisciplinary teams.
