What is a cytogenetic fish technologist?

A Cytogenetic FISH (Fluorescence In Situ Hybridization) Technologist is a laboratory professional who specializes in analyzing chromosomes using FISH techniques. They prepare, process, and analyze biological samples to detect genetic abnormalities, such as chromosomal deletions, duplications, or rearrangements. These findings are often used in diagnosing genetic disorders, cancers, and other conditions. The role requires strong attention to detail, knowledge of molecular biology, and experience handling laboratory equipment.

What are the typical daily responsibilities of a cytogenetic fish technologist?

As a Cytogenetic Fish Technologist, your day-to-day duties usually involve preparing, processing, and analyzing fish tissue or cell samples using cytogenetic techniques like FISH and karyotyping. You'll be responsible for preparing reagents, working with advanced microscopy equipment, recording and interpreting genetic data, and maintaining detailed documentation for quality control. Collaboration with molecular biologists, lab managers, and other researchers is common to ensure accurate results and to troubleshoot any technical challenges. Depending on the lab, you may also be involved in reporting findings to supervisors or contributing to research projects. This role offers a mix of hands-on bench work and analytical tasks, making it both varied and intellectually stimulating.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a cytogenetic fish technologist?

To thrive as a Cytogenetic Fish Technologist, you need a solid background in cytogenetics, laboratory techniques, and fish biology, typically gained through a degree in biological sciences or a related field. Familiarity with fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH), karyotyping software, microscopes, and quality control standards is essential, and certification from relevant organizations (such as ASCP) can be highly valued. Detail orientation, problem-solving abilities, and strong teamwork and communication skills set exceptional candidates apart. These skills and qualities ensure accurate genetic analyses, efficient collaboration, and reliable reporting in research or clinical laboratory settings.

Job description

Cytogenetic Technologist (CG) — Full-Time Opportunity near Pineville, NC

We're looking for a skilled Cytogenetic Technologist to join a laboratory team performing high-impact diagnostic work from start to finish.

In this role, you'll manage the complete cytogenetics workflow â€” culturing blood, bone marrow, and biopsy specimens; harvesting; slide preparation and staining (Giemsa, Q-, R-, C-banding, NOR); and detailed microscopic analysis including karyotyping and FISH. You'll make real-time decisions about cell quality, culture feeding, and subculturing, and operate automated karyotyping equipment.

Beyond the bench, you'll play an active role in lab operations — maintaining QC on incubators, CO2 supply, and liquid nitrogen levels, managing inventory, and helping orient new staff. Participation in validation studies for new test development is part of the role as well.

This is a great fit for a CG who takes pride in specimen integrity, stays current with the field, and wants to be a valued contributor in a collaborative lab environment.
