What is a custodial helper?

Custodial helpers are support staff who assist custodians or janitors in maintaining cleanliness and order in buildings such as schools, offices, and public facilities. Their tasks often include sweeping, mopping, taking out trash, restocking supplies, and helping with minor repairs. They work under the supervision of a head custodian or facility manager and play an important role in ensuring a safe and sanitary environment for everyone. Custodial helpers may also assist with setting up rooms for events and responding to immediate cleaning needs. The position typically requires reliability, attention to detail, and the ability to follow instructions.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a custodial helper?

To thrive as a Custodial Helper, you need basic knowledge of cleaning procedures, attention to detail, and physical stamina, with a high school diploma or equivalent often preferred. Familiarity with cleaning equipment, chemical safety protocols, and sometimes OSHA guidelines is important for effective job performance. Reliability, a strong work ethic, and good communication skills help you stand out in this role. These skills ensure a safe, clean, and healthy environment for building occupants and contribute to overall workplace efficiency.

What are some common challenges a custodial helper might face during their shifts, and how can they be managed?

Custodial Helpers often encounter challenges such as maintaining cleanliness in high-traffic areas, managing time effectively to complete multiple tasks, and handling exposure to cleaning chemicals. Good communication with the custodial team and supervisors also ensures issues are addressed promptly and workloads are balanced.

Job description

Custodial Supervisor
Lead the team that helps create the campus where students learn, live, and thrive.
McPherson College is seeking an experienced, hands-on Custodial Supervisor to lead our custodial team while helping maintain a beautiful, clean, and welcoming campus.
This is an ideal opportunity for someone who enjoys leading by example. As Custodial Supervisor, you'll work alongside your team while coordinating daily operations, training employees, maintaining quality standards, and ensuring every campus facility reflects the pride we take in serving our students, faculty, staff, and visitors.
Why McPherson College?
McPherson College is one of the Midwest's most distinctive private colleges. We have been recognized multiple times as a Great College to Work For and are proud of our collaborative, supportive campus culture.
This is an exciting time to join the College. We're investing nearly $70 million in new construction and campus improvements, making this one of the most active periods of growth in our history. Our Facilities Management team is central to that success, ensuring our classrooms, residence halls, athletic facilities, and public spaces remain clean, safe, and ready to support student life.
McPherson College is also home to the nation's premier Automotive Restoration program-the only bachelor's degree program of its kind in the United States. We're financially strong, mission-driven, and committed to providing an exceptional environment where students and employees can thrive.
What You'll Do
As Custodial Supervisor, you'll split your time between working with the custodial team and providing day-to-day leadership.
Your primary responsibilities will include:
  • Working alongside custodial staff to clean classrooms, offices, residence halls, athletic facilities, and public spaces.
  • Planning daily work assignments and coordinating custodial coverage across campus.
  • Training new employees on cleaning procedures, equipment, safety practices, and College standards.
  • Coaching, mentoring, and supporting custodial staff while fostering a positive team environment.
  • Conducting building inspections to ensure consistent quality and cleanliness.
  • Coordinating major cleaning projects, including floor refinishing, carpet cleaning, wall washing, and summer deep-cleaning activities.
  • Evaluating new custodial products and equipment to improve efficiency and effectiveness.
  • Maintaining custodial checklists, records, schedules, and performance evaluations.
  • Collaborating with other Facilities Management staff to support special events and campus operations.

This is a leadership position where you'll have a direct impact on the appearance of the campus and the success of your team.
What We're Looking For
We're looking for someone who enjoys serving others, leading by example, and taking pride in maintaining a beautiful campus.
Successful candidates will have:
  • Experience supervising or leading a custodial, housekeeping, facilities, or similar operations team.
  • Strong knowledge of commercial cleaning methods, equipment, and safe chemical handling.
  • Excellent organizational and communication skills.
  • The ability to motivate, train, and develop employees.
  • Good judgment, dependability, and a commitment to quality.
  • A customer-service mindset with the ability to work effectively with students, faculty, staff, and visitors.
  • The ability to perform the physical requirements of custodial work, including lifting up to approximately 50 pounds and remaining active throughout the workday.

Equivalent combinations of education, training, and relevant work experience will be considered. We value practical leadership, initiative, integrity, and a positive attitude just as much as formal education.
Schedule
This is a full-time, 12-month position.
Typical work hours are Monday through Friday from 7:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Occasional evening, weekend, or overtime work may be required to support campus events, special projects, or operational needs.
Benefits
McPherson College offers one of the strongest benefits packages in the area, including:
  • Competitive salary based on qualifications and experience
  • 17 paid holidays each year
  • Generous paid time off and separate sick leave
  • Medical, dental, and vision insurance
  • Basic life insurance
  • Short- and long-term disability insurance
  • 403(b) retirement plan with a 10% employer contribution after one year
  • Undergraduate tuition assistance for eligible immediate family members

Ready to Lead Our Team?
If you're looking for an opportunity to lead by example, build a strong team, and help maintain a campus that students are proud to call home, we'd love to hear from you. Apply today and become part of a Facilities Management team that values leadership, teamwork, integrity, and pride in a job well done.
