Job description
The MPTC's training programs include a comprehensive, 800-hour basic recruit training program for new police officers, statutorily required annual in-service training programs, and specialized training programs. The MPTC's academies work closely with the local municipal police departments in their respective regions and are responsive to regional training needs and requirements. The MPTC operates 6 regional academies and oversees 10 authorized academies across the Commonwealth.
The MPTC is seeking an experienced curriculum specialist to design and update instructional material for in-person and online law enforcement training provided by the MPTC. This person will focus on translating state-mandated guidelines and best practices into actionable, engaging and legally sound lesson plans, storyboards and eLearning formats for the law enforcement officers of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Coordinate with subject matter experts (SME) and necessary staff to research, create and develop annual in-service curriculum for MA law enforcement officers within the annual timeline.
- Partner with SMEs to research, create and revise as needed in-person learning and the framework for e-learning lesson plans.
- Develop, update and revise lesson plans and other training materials for all MPTC courses to ensure they incorporate research-based best practices for adult learning and police training.
- Coordinate curriculum update classes for all MPTC certified instructors on new and revised lessons.
- Train MPTC - certified instructors on adult learning activities and techniques incorporated into new or revised lesson plans.
- Responsible with creating, or assisting with, script development, storyboarding and video-editing for the roll out of on-line content.
- Work across divisions and teams to ensure MPTC required CMR's and other critical projects are completed in a timely and accurate manner.
- Other duties as assigned.
Preferred Qualifications:
- 5+ years of experience in Curriculum Development, Instructional Design, Education ideally within a law enforcement, criminal justice or military setting.
- Knowledge of adult learning principles and educational best practices.
- Depth of knowledge in education pedagogy.
- Ability to thoroughly research topics as well as organize and present the materials for diverse learning abilities.
- Exceptional writing and editing skills with the ability to convey complex legal and procedural information clearly, accurately and with a lens for adult learning best practices.
- Ability to work as part of a small team while understanding the greater mission of the organization.
- Advanced experience with Microsoft Suite, Airtable, Adobe, Canva.
- Basic project management skills with the ability to manage multiple projects at once while meeting project deadlines.
- Familiarity with Articlulate software, ability to use various other instructional design programs and any supplemental software such as video editing.
- Strong communication and collaboration skills with a team-oriented approach.
- Knowledge of, or experience in, the law enforcement field.
Qualifications:
First consideration will be given to those applicants that apply within the first 14 days. MINIMUM ENTRANCE REQUIREMENTS: Applicants must have at least (A) four years of full-time, or equivalent part-time, professional, administrative or managerial experience in business administration, business management or public administration the major duties of which involved program management, program administration, program coordination, program planning and/or program analysis, and (B) of which at least one year must have been in a supervisory capacity, or (C) any equivalent combination of the required experience and the substitutions below. Substitutions: I. A Bachelor's degree with a major in business administration, business management or public administration may be substituted for a maximum of two years of the required (A) experience.* II. A Graduate degree with a major in business administration, business management or public administration may be substituted for a maximum of three years of the required (A) experience.* III. A Bachelor's or higher degree with a major other than in business administration, business management or public administration may be substituted for a maximum of one year of the required (A) experience.* *Education toward such a degree will be prorated on the basis of the proportion of the requirements actually completed. NOTE: No substitutions will be permitted for the required (B) experience.
