Job description

BUILDING DIAGNOSTICS & STRUCTURAL ENGINEER, P.E.

Flexible Full-Time or Part-Time | Home-Based | Twin Cities Field Work

Join Criterium-Twin Cities Engineers, an established specialist consulting firm based in Edina, Minnesota. We help homeowner associations, property managers, real-estate professionals, investors, developers, and building owners make informed decisions about the residential and commercial buildings in which people live and work.

Use your engineering judgment to solve real building problems, without the bureaucracy of a large firm or the administrative burden of operating a solo practice. This is a field-based, home-office role with flexible full-time or part-time scheduling. The role can emphasize existing-building inspections, building diagnostics, residential/light-commercial structural evaluation, repair recommendations, and light structural design according to your experience and interests.

Our operations team supports project intake, scheduling, project setup, templates, invoicing, and administrative coordination so engineers can focus on technical judgment, client service, and high-quality work.

Semi-retired professionals, experienced engineers seeking a predictable 2 to 4 day schedule, and Minnesota P.E.s looking for a flexible, well-supported alternative to a large A/E firm are encouraged to apply.

Office Location: Edina, Minnesota

POSITION SUMMARY

The Building Diagnostics & Structural Engineer will evaluate existing residential and light-commercial buildings; document conditions; communicate practical conclusions to clients; and prepare clear, defensible, photo-supported reports. Projects may include structural observations and evaluations, water-management and exterior-envelope concerns, foundations, framing, retaining walls, common-area building assessments, and limited repair recommendations or light structural design.

The successful candidate is an observant, client-oriented Minnesota Professional Engineer who enjoys practical field work, independent technical judgment, and clear communication. Work is primarily within the Twin Cities region, with home-office time for report preparation and coordination.

COMPENSATION AND SCHEDULE

Compensation: $50$60 per hour, depending on Minnesota P.E. status and relevant experience with existing buildings, structural evaluation, and residential/light-commercial design.

Schedule: Flexible full-time or part-time employment. A predictable 2 to 4 day schedule or full-time schedule may be available based on qualifications and workload.

Performance pay: Eligible employees may participate in a bonus program based on individual contribution, report quality, collected project revenue, and company performance.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Perform evaluations of existing residential and light-commercial buildings, including structural, water-management, exterior-envelope, and common building-condition concerns.

Document site conditions through notes, photographs, measurements, and organized field observations.

Prepare and review concise, defensible, client-ready reports using established templates and quality-assurance procedures.

Perform or review limited residential/light-commercial structural calculations, repair recommendations, and details consistent with experience and licensure.

Explain findings and recommendations to clients clearly, objectively, and practically.

Collaborate with engineers and operations staff on scope, quality, priorities, and schedule.

Contribute technical input to project scopes and identify follow-on needs when appropriate.

Maintain accurate time records and support timely project delivery.

WHAT WE OFFER

Flexible full-time and part-time schedules, including a predictable 2 to 4 day option.

Established client demand and project flow without requiring you to build a book of business.

Home-office work for reporting and coordination, with planned local field assignments.

Operational support for scheduling, project setup, proposal administration, invoicing, and document coordination.

Practical work involving real buildings, visible client impact, and durable client relationships.

Small-team autonomy, direct access to leadership, and fast decisions.

Established report templates, technical resources, and quality-assurance support.

Opportunity to shape your focus around inspections, building diagnostics, residential structural evaluation, light design, mentoring, or a blend.

IRS mileage reimbursement for approved personal-vehicle use.

Health-insurance stipend, matching 401(k) contributions, and bonus-program eligibility for qualifying employees.

Support for professional licensure, continuing education, and relevant professional memberships.

All benefits are subject to the terms and eligibility requirements of the applicable plans and company policies.

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, AND KNOWLEDGE QUALIFICATIONS

Required

Bachelor's degree in civil, structural, or mechanical engineering.

Active Minnesota Professional Engineer license, or ability to obtain Minnesota licensure within 6 to 12 months.

Experience evaluating, designing, constructing, inspecting, or repairing residential and/or light-commercial buildings.

Ability to communicate technical conclusions clearly in writing and conversation.

Ability to safely perform field assessments, including ladders, roofs, crawlspaces, and exterior conditions, with reasonable accommodation where applicable.

Preferred, Not Required

Existing-building assessment, forensic, restoration, building-envelope, reserve-study, residential structural, or light-commercial experience.

Knowledge of Minnesota residential and building codes, wood-frame construction, foundations, retaining walls, or water-management issues.

Experience with repair details, light structural calculations, or construction-administration observations.

SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Strong observational, analytical, and critical-thinking skills.

Sound professional judgment and the ability to recognize and communicate risk appropriately.

Clear, objective, and well-organized technical writing.

Professional client communication and relationship-management skills.

Self-directed work habits, organization, reliability, and attention to detail.

Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively with a small team.

Comfort using common computer software, engineering-calculation tools, and report-development systems.

WORKING CONDITIONS AND PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Work from a home office when preparing reports and coordinating projects.

Field assignments are primarily within the 13-county Twin Cities region. Field days are planned in advance whenever practical.

Exposure to outside elements is necessary during site assessments.

Use of a personal vehicle is required, with mileage reimbursement.

Regularly required to sit, stand, reach, bend, and move about project sites.

Ability to carry up to 50 pounds, climb ladders, enter confined spaces, and walk on sloped roofs, with reasonable accommodation where applicable.

Please indicate whether you prefer full-time, part-time, or a defined 2 to 4 day schedule.
