Job Description The Criminal Analyst is responsible for collecting, analyzing, and disseminating criminal intelligence information to support law enforcement investigations and operations. The Criminal Analyst will conduct research, use analytical tools and techniques, and collaborate with other agencies to identify and assess criminal activity trends and patterns.
Work is performed under the limited supervision of the Internal Operations Manager and serves at the pleasure of the Chatham County Sheriff. Essential Functions To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential function satisfactorily. Essential Functions Collect and analyze criminal intelligence information to identify and assess criminal activity trends and patterns. Use analytical tools and techniques to process and interpret data, including geographic information systems (GIS), statistical analysis, and social network analysis.
Collaborate with law enforcement officers and other agencies to share intelligence information and coordinate investigations and operations. Conduct research and gather information from various sources, including public records, social media, and law enforcement databases. Prepare reports and presentations on criminal activity trends and patterns to support law enforcement investigations and operations.
Maintain records and documentation related to criminal intelligence information in accordance with policies and procedures. Provide training and guidance to law enforcement officers and other personnel on criminal intelligence analysis tools and techniques. Participate in criminal intelligence-related meetings, conferences, and other events.
Responsible for the collection, collation, analysis, and dissemination of monthly, quarterly, and yearly statistical information concerning criminal and non-criminal reports. Provide accurate, timely and relevant analysis of crime patterns and trends that aid in the efficient deployment of department resources. Research and analyze ongoing and long-term crime problems using statistical analysis such as correlation and regression analysis to prepare reports on current and predicted crime trends to aid the agency's development of crime prevention strategies.
Organize, analyze, and disseminate information on crime patterns and trends to provide operational units with knowledge for effective operational strategies and for the prevention and investigation of crimes. Analyze Incident Reports data by frequency, geographic factors, temporal factors, victim target descriptors, suspect descriptors, vehicle descriptors, modus operandi factors, and any other factors identified as relevant to the analysis. Analyze Calls for Service data by frequency, geographic factors, type of call, call disposition, temporal factors, unit response times, and other factors identified as relevant to the analysis.
Utilize crime mapping techniques and geographic information system (GIS) applications to conduct spatial analysis of data. Conduct data cleaning and data management techniques to prepare data for analysis process. Review crime reports and associated databases (i.e., SQL, Access) to identify, summarize, and report relevant series, patterns, trends, and hot spots
Prepare and disseminate bulletins, matrices, spreadsheets, maps, and summary reports to appropriate segments of the agency on a timely basis. Prepare and disseminate current criminal intelligence alerts, BOLOs, and reports to provide internal staff and other agencies with timely information. Apply crime intelligence analysis tactics to the development of link charts and association matrices, applying the concepts of betweenness and degree centrality to individual nodes in order to aid in the identification of key nodes within a network.
Establish, develop, and foster relationships and connections with other law enforcement and government agencies as well as outside sources, to assist and support in the maintenance and exchange of pertinent information among law enforcement agencies and partnering organizations. Provide analytical support to the agency for various special projects and assignments, as needed. Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications Associate degree Knowledge of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) concept and functions (i.e., Shapefiles). Preferred Education and Experience 2+ years of experience as a Crime Analyst Bachelor's Degree in Criminal Justice, Criminology, or related field Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Thorough knowledge of Office rules and regulations
Thorough knowledge of the geography of the County and the location of important buildings. Thorough knowledge of standard office practices, procedures, equipment and secretarial techniques. Thorough knowledge of business English, spelling and arithmetic.
Thorough knowledge of the organization and functions of the department and of general administrative policies and practices. Ability to keep office records and to prepare accurate reports from file sources. Ability to perform and organize work independently.
Ability to prepare effective correspondence on routine matters and to perform routine office management details without referral to supervisor. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates and the general public. Knowledge of criminal intelligence analysis tools and techniques, including GIS, statistical analysis, and social network analysis.
Familiarity with law enforcement databases and information sharing protocols. Strong communication, analytical, and problem-solving skills. Ability to work independently and manage multiple tasks and priorities.

Special Requirements May require specific certifications and/or licenses depending on office assignment. Must possess a valid North Carolina driver's license. Must pass a criminal record check, driving history, medical/psychological exam, and a pre-employment drug screen.
