What is a credit assistant?

Credit Assistants are professionals who support credit departments in financial institutions or companies by processing credit applications, conducting basic financial analysis, and assisting with the management of credit accounts. They help gather and verify customer information, prepare reports, and communicate with clients or internal teams regarding credit decisions. This role is essential for ensuring that the credit approval process runs smoothly and that records are accurate and up to date.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a credit assistant, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Credit Assistant, you need a solid understanding of credit principles, attention to detail, and skills in financial data analysis, usually supported by a high school diploma or associate’s degree in finance or a related field. Familiarity with credit management software, databases, and proficiency in Microsoft Excel are commonly required, and some employers may prefer candidates with certifications like NACM's Credit Business Associate (CBA). Strong organizational skills, effective communication, and the ability to multitask make someone stand out in this position. These abilities are crucial for accurately processing credit applications, minimizing risk, and supporting the credit team’s efficiency.

How does a credit assistant typically collaborate with other departments within a company?

As a Credit Assistant, you’ll often work closely with teams such as sales, accounts receivable, and customer service to ensure smooth credit processing and timely payments. You may coordinate with sales to verify customer orders and payment terms, assist accounts receivable with tracking outstanding balances, and communicate with customer service regarding credit holds or disputes. This collaborative environment helps maintain accurate financial records and supports positive client relationships, making strong communication skills essential in this role.

Job Description
Leader. Charismatic. Friendly. Problem solver. Team player. Does this sound like you? If so, we've got the perfect position for you as a Retail In-Store Assistant Branch Manager.
As a Retail In-Store Assistant Branch Manager at Michigan First Credit Union, you'll be challenged to deliver five-star service while building relationships with our members. We're a family here, so outstanding teamwork is a must. Our number one goal is to provide our members, and potential new members, with personalized solutions suited to their financial situations, so they can walk out feeling happy, satisfied, and worry-free.
What You'll Do:
  • Serve as a motivational leader and share your expertise in lending, investments and other banking products and services with members, potential members, and your team.
  • Provide stellar service to Credit Union members. Ideal candidates will have a proven track record of delivering phenomenal service in a financial and/or retail environment and are comfortable with "needs-based" selling.
  • Serve as a face for our brand. Happy, confident, positive - that's who we are. We want exceptional conversationalists with outgoing personalities that are passionate and enthusiastic about meeting and making connections with others.
  • Manage the details. You'll be responsible for all or part of scheduling staff, assigning duties and priorities in accordance with Credit Union policies, principles and procedures, as assigned by the Branch Manager.
  • Teach and inspire. Your teammates will look to you for guidance and you'll set the tone for branch success. Excellent interpersonal skills are a must!
  • Share our services. Seek out and talk directly with in-store customers to evaluate their financial needs and see where our products fit in.
  • Research. You'll make recommendations for new, improved or expanded products and services based on feedback from store customers. You'll also review other in-store operations to plan and direct sales programs that address emerging needs and potential members.
  • Find better ways. Develop plans that increase material, machine, and team member efficiency.
  • Lend a hand. The Branch Manager will rely on you to help them get the job done, and you'll assist them with completing other duties as assigned, including providing overall branch direction, coordination and evaluation in their absence.
  • Crunch the numbers. You'll oversee the reporting and analysis of all transactions, goals and activities, and prepare branch reports and schedules required by headquarters or regulatory agencies.
  • Aid with developing joint promotional opportunities with the retailer.
  • Help conduct promotions. Support the Credit Union in promoting products and services, and lead team members to do the same.
  • Ensure the branch image is favorable and reflects a sound and secure financial institution that employs prudent housekeeping procedures, safety measures, and provides a pleasant atmosphere for members, including privacy, confidentiality, and ease of use.

Qualifications
  • Education. Must have an associate's degree or two years of equivalent leadership experience with a bank or credit union.
  • Financial institution background. Thorough knowledge of lending processes and experience with financial institution products and services is a must.
  • Outgoing, personable candidates. You must truly love people to work here. We're looking for exceptional conversationalists who demonstrate the ability to engage strangers in conversation about our services, and adhere to our member service standards each day.
  • Critical thinking skills. We're looking for someone with creative and innovative problem identification and resolution skills.
  • Coaching experience. Must have experience evaluating and making sound decisions on sales, service and other skill levels of team members, and a track record of successfully coaching team members to improve their skills.
  • Must be able to work a flexible schedule, including weekends and early evenings. (Please note - Team members are only expected to work two Saturdays per month, and no Sundays. When scheduled to work on Saturdays, in addition to having Sunday off, team members will normally receive another day off during the weekday.)
  • Communications skills. We're looking for top-notch skills, whether you're interacting in-person or through email, we want excellent communicators.
  • Computer savvy professionals. Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint is a plus!
