What is a creative designer?

A Creative Designer is a professional responsible for developing visual concepts and designs for various media, such as advertisements, branding, websites, and product packaging. They use their artistic skills and knowledge of design software to communicate ideas that inspire, inform, or captivate consumers. Creative Designers often work with marketing teams, clients, or art directors to create visually appealing content that aligns with a brand's identity. Their role may involve brainstorming, sketching, creating digital assets, and ensuring that all visuals meet project objectives. They play a key role in shaping the visual aspects of a company's communications.

What is a creative designer?

A creative designer, also known as a graphic designer, is involved with advertising and marketing. Some creative designers are employed directly by an organization while others work for an advertising agency. Another option is to work as a self-employed freelance creative designer. Your main job duties involve creating advertising materials for a company. As a creative designer, you create a rough layout for design projects and follow them through to completion. You use digital illustration software to create the finished products. It is often essential to collaborate with other designers as well as writers, marketers, advertisers, and vendors on the project.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a creative designer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Creative Designer, you need a strong grasp of design principles, proficiency in visual storytelling, and typically a degree in graphic design or a related field. Mastery of tools like Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign) and familiarity with digital design platforms are essential. Creativity, attention to detail, and effective communication help set standout designers apart in collaborative environments. These skills ensure the creation of visually impactful, brand-consistent work that meets client needs and drives project success.

How does a creative designer typically collaborate with other departments during a project?

Creative Designers frequently work closely with marketing, product, and development teams to ensure visual concepts align with overall business goals. They participate in brainstorming sessions, gather input from stakeholders, and adjust designs based on feedback from cross-functional colleagues. This collaborative process helps ensure that creative outputs not only look appealing but also support strategic objectives, meet technical requirements, and resonate with the target audience. Maintaining open communication and adaptability is key for success in these collaborative environments.

How much does a creative designer get paid?

The average salary for a creative designer varies by experience and location but typically ranges from $45,000 to $85,000 annually. Entry-level designers may earn less, while experienced professionals with specialized skills or certifications can earn higher salaries, especially in competitive markets or with advanced proficiency in design tools like Adobe Creative Suite.

What qualifications do you need to be a creative designer?

A creative designer typically needs a bachelor's degree in graphic design, visual arts, or a related field. Strong skills in design software such as Adobe Creative Suite, a good portfolio, and creativity are essential; some roles may also require experience or certifications in specific tools or techniques.

Job description

Creative Director (Art)

Oh hey there, creative sage. Yes, you.

If you move fast, care deeply about the work, and don't wait for permission to make things better, we should talk. Wisdom welcome. Robes optional.

Funday is a full-service agency powered equally by fun and brains. We believe creativity works best when curiosity meets craft, culture meets performance, and people feel trusted to act. We don't do stuffy. We don't do slow for the sake of slow. We do smart, brave, effective work with people who actually enjoy working together.

The role

As Creative Director, you are responsible for leading the creative output across multiple accounts, teams, and disciplines. You set the creative bar, shape the vision, and critically, help teams act on it. You're digitally focused, culturally curious, and comfortable making tough calls to move work forward.

This is ahands-on leadership role. You are as comfortable creating as you are directing. You see opportunities early, define priorities clearly, and help teams turn ideas into real work quickly. You don't wait for things to happen, you make them happen.

Our teams are nimble, distributed, and built for momentum. Your role will evolve day to day, and you'll thrive in that.

Location - You will work remotely from anywhere in AB, BC, or ON.

What you'll do

Creative Leadership & Vision

  • Lead creative across multiple accounts, taking ownership of the good, the bad, and the hard conversations.
  • Develop a clear, creative vision and guide teams to execute it, not just conceptually, but in the work itself.
  • Continually refine creative solutions, leveraging the right people and disciplines to get the best outcome.
  • Hold yourself and your teams to a high creative standard, with accountability baked in.

Digital-First Thinking

  • Champion digital, social, paid, and emerging platforms, with a strong understanding of how ideas live, scale, and perform in the real world.
  • Solve creative problems with both strategy and speed, knowing how to fill a media buy and when to find smarter, more unexpected opportunities beyond it.
  • Use insight, culture, and technology to approach problems in new ways, turning briefs into ideas that feel relevant, timely, and effective.
  • Proactively spot opportunities for clients and act on them, whether that's a campaign idea, a social post, an experiential moment, or something in between.
  • Stay curious about marketing, culture, and trends, and turn that curiosity into clear action, not just inspiration decks.

Client & Team Leadership

  • Lead confident, clear creative conversations with both clients and internal teams, presenting work through a strategic and business lens, not just a creative one.
  • Build trusted client relationships by anticipating needs, spotting opportunities early, and delivering smart solutions that move the work (and the business) forward.
  • Lead, mentor, and grow creative teams across multiple projects, adapting your leadership style to bring out the best in different people.
  • Create a culture of curiosity, collaboration, and honest feedback, where high standards, respect, and accountability go hand in hand.
  • Navigate feedback, conflict, and tough conversations with emotional intelligence, clarity, and care, using them as opportunities for growth rather than friction.
  • Support performance reviews and ongoing development in a way that helps people level up and do the best work of their careers.

What you'll need to succeed

  • A strong portfolio demonstrating conceptual excellence and digital-first thinking (portfolio required).
  • 10+ years of experience in a creative agency environment (digital experience strongly preferred).
  • Proven experience leading multiple teams and large accounts.
  • Deep understanding of storytelling across channels, digital, social, paid, print.
  • Strong business and strategic thinking alongside creative craft.
  • Curiosity about culture, technology, and marketing, and the ability to turn insight into ideas.
  • Confidence in making decisions, challenging the status quo, and pushing work forward.
  • Comfort being hands-on while leading at a high level.
  • A belief that great work comes from clarity, trust, and momentum.

You'll want to read this part

  • Portfolio required: no portfolio, no consideration.
  • If you live in Canada, are able to work here, and you are in one of these provinces: BC, AB or ON - please apply! Otherwise, we're sorry, we're not set up to support staff outside of these regions.
  • Please note: we post the same role in multiple locations to help us cast a wide net. Applying to each location for a posting will not increase your chances. Now that we've saved you some time, go do something fun!
  • This posting is for an existing vacancy we are looking to fill immediately and not a prospective future role (i.e. we're saying this isn't a ghost job)

Come be a Funatic

We believe you won't perform at your best if you're not having fun. And you can't have fun if you're not performing. We believe this creates the best client + agency relationships and is the best way to make great work.

We believe in respect, inclusivity, kindness, equity, and equality. We want to make a positive impact. We believe that collaboration is the fun part of being at work. We strive to create a culture in which "we" is more important than "me".

Apart from loving terrible fun puns, we're also 100% remote, and that might not appeal to everyone - but if you value flexibility, it's perfect.
