Job description

RK&K is hiring a Transportation Design Intern to join our Highways team in our Fairfax, VA office.
The position will continue through the summer, with the ability to work through the school year if desired. As an Intern in our Highways Department at RK&K, you will receive on-the-job training, work alongside, and collaborate closely with one of the largest, most talented groups of transportation engineering professionals in the industry.
In this role, you will gain experience using MicroStation CADD and associated transportation design software. You will gain insight and experience into the steps required to develop designs for linear transportation projects that may include new roadways, roadway extensions, pedestrian / bike facilities, traffic calming and intersection safety improvements. Additionally, you will have the opportunity to work with our structures, hydraulics, geotechnical and environmental groups. You will be exposed to design challenges and will complete tasks both in the office and in the field as needed.
Essential Function
  • Work on projects throughout the Southeast region including field data collection, design of roadway, bicycle and pedestrian facilities, maintenance of traffic / construction work zones, corridor planning, cost estimating, structures and hydraulics and collaborating with team members to develop creative solutions to complex challenges.

Required Skills and Experience
  • Currently pursuing a degree in Civil Engineering
  • Proficient knowledge of Microsoft Office products (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.)
  • Self-motivated with a strong attention to detail
  • Ability to work both independently and in a team environment.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Valid driver's license

Preferred Skills and Experience
  • Participation in professional societies (ASCE, ASHE, etc.)
  • Applicable prior intern (Co-Op) experience
  • Basic knowledge of AutoCAD, MicroStation and/or GIS
