Senior Vice President, Tax Reporting and Compliance

We’re seeking a future team member for the role of Senior Vice President, Tax Reporting and Compliance to join our Wealth Management team. This role may be located in Pittsburgh, PA; Atlanta, GA; Beachwood, OH; Denver, CO; Greenwich, CT; Houston, TX; Seattle, WA; Tampa, FL; or West Palm Beach, FL.

In this role, you’ll make an impact in the following ways:

  • Estate Tax Compliance Ownership: Lead preparation, review, and filing coordination of federal Form 706, with accurate valuation, deductions, elections, and timely submissions; manage related state inheritance/death tax filings.
  •  GSTT Monitoring and Reporting: Maintain robust monitoring of distributions and taxable terminations; coordinate or review filings (e.g., Form 706, Schedule R/RS and applicable returns) and ensure proper application of GST exemptions and allocations.
  • Fiduciary and Related Filings Oversight: Support or review fiduciary income tax returns (Form 1041) where estate tax positions impact income tax reporting; ensure alignment of deductions, basis, and elections across filings.
  • Form 8971 / Cost Basis Reporting: Own end-to-end process to track reportable assets and work with internal stakeholders and tax vendor(s) to ensure accurate beneficiary statements and basis consistency.
  • Refund Recovery and Penalty Abatement: Proactively pursue outstanding refunds from IRS and state authorities; draft advocacy letters, escalate via Taxpayer Advocate Service when appropriate; identify and remediate penalties through documentation and negotiation.
  • IRS/State Controversy Support: Serve as primary liaison for audits, notices, and controversies; gather documentation, prepare responses, coordinate with external advisors, and negotiate favorable resolutions.
  • Process Ownership and Continuous Improvement: Design, document, and refine procedures, checklists, controls, and dashboards for filings, tracking, address changes, successor trustee intake, and state open remainders; eliminate duplicative steps and reduce cycle time.
  • Risk and Control Management: Maintain strong risk culture with timely escalation of issues; ensure complete, accurate, and timely filings; monitor vendor performance; implement controls aligned to policy and regulatory expectations.
  • Front Office and Client Collaboration: Partner with Estate Settlement Officers and Wealth colleagues across regions; join client/advisor calls to explain tax positions, payment protocols, protective claims, and settlement strategies.
  • Proactively address any potential issues and provide guidance to junior colleagues on tax or regulatory calculations for complex or unprecedented circumstances.
  • This role has no direct reports.

To be successful in this role, we’re seeking the following:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Tax, or related field; advanced credentials preferred (CPA, EA, JD, or LL.M. in Taxation).
  • 7+ years of progressive experience in estate, gift, and trust taxation (public accounting, law firm, or wealth/trust company environment).
  • Demonstrated autonomy in owning complex estate tax matters, with a track record of timely filings, issue resolution, and stakeholder communication.
  • Expert knowledge of federal estate tax, GSTT mechanics, and state inheritance/death tax regimes; strong understanding of fiduciary income tax interactions.
  •  Proficiency with tax research platforms and preparation tools; advanced Excel skills and strong documentation discipline.

BNY assesses market data to ensure a competitive compensation package for our employees. The base salary for this position is expected to be between $104,000 and $149,000 per year at the commencement of employment. However, base salary if hired will be determined on an individualized basis, including as to experience and market location, and is only part of the BNY total compensation package, which, depending on the position, may also include commission earnings, discretionary bonuses, short and long-term incentive packages, and company-sponsored benefit programs.

This position is at-will and the Company reserves the right to modify base salary (as well as any other discretionary payment or compensation) at any time, including for reasons related to individual performance, change in geographic location, Company or individual department/team performance, and market factors.
