Job Description

The US Systematic Wealth team is looking to hire a Tax Manager supporting Man's US tax aware commingled funds and separately managed accounts. The role involves establishing and maintaining tax compliance processes, providing proactive tax advisory to the investment team, and ensuring the funds' tax positions are optimized. The role will suit a highly driven candidate who is motivated to be part of a growing function at Man and develop their career as the business scales. A core expectation of the Tax Manager will be to leverage their experience to establish appropriate tax frameworks and controls alongside the broader Middle Office and Investment teams. The Tax Manager will be responsible for a significant portion of the day-to-day tax operations and managing relationships with external tax advisors and counterparts.

Responsibilities:

  • Tax Compliance & Reporting: Directing and overseeing tax compliance for Man's non-Section 475(f) hedge funds and separately managed accounts, including oversight of all federal, state, and investor-level tax reporting (e.g., Form 1065, K-1s, tax estimates, pro formas, withholding obligations).
  • Tax Aware Strategy Advisory: Partnering with portfolio managers and the investment team to proactively advise on the tax implications of trading activity, recommending adjustments to strategies to maximize after-tax returns (e.g., tax-loss harvesting, wash sale management, holding period optimization, short-term vs. long-term gain/loss positioning).
  • Complex Transaction Tax Analysis: Analyzing the tax treatment of complex transactions — including constructive sales, straddles, Section 1256 contracts, swaps, and other derivatives — ensuring accurate characterization and reporting.
  • Liaising with external tax advisors, fund administrators, and auditors to reconcile tax positions, review draft returns, and oversee all tax-related activity performed by third-party service providers.
  • Overseeing the establishment and maintenance of tax accounting procedures to support the financial and regulatory reporting obligations of the funds, including book-to-tax adjustments.
  • Monitoring legislative and regulatory developments affecting the tax treatment of fund strategies and communicating impacts to senior stakeholders and the investment team.
  • Ensuring the quality and effectiveness of tax controls through identification and mitigation of tax risks and the documentation of any enhancements to the tax governance framework.
  • Oversight of tax lot accounting, cost basis reporting, and wash sale tracking across funds and managed accounts.
  • Actively identifying trends and potential issues with tax positions to improve the control environment, drive efficiencies, and minimize tax leakage.
  • Taking a proactive and innovative approach to enhancing tax processes and maintaining internal tax policies and procedures manuals.

Key Skills & Experience:

  • 5+ years of tax experience in asset management, public accounting (Big 4 preferred), or a combination thereof.
  • Deep knowledge of tax compliance for non-Section 475(f) hedge funds, including partnership taxation, investor allocations, tax lot accounting, cost basis reporting, straddles and wash sale management, and the treatment of capital gains/losses vs. ordinary income/losses for complex financial instruments.
  • Experience with tax aware or tax-managed investment strategies — understanding how investment decisions impact after-tax outcomes and the ability to translate tax rules into actionable guidance for portfolio managers (e.g., tax-loss harvesting, wash sale management, holding period optimization, short-term vs. long-term gain/loss positioning)..
  • Strong expertise in complex financial instruments and transactions, including derivatives, swaps, straddles, Section 988, Section 1256 contracts, wash sales and constructive sale rules.
  • Knowledge of commingled fund structures and separately managed accounts.
  • Knowledge of the nuances in tax treatment for Fixed Income, Equity, and Derivative products.
  • Experience working at an Investment Manager/Advisor preferred.
  • CPA and/or MScT (Master of Science in Taxation) strongly preferred.
  • Excellent Microsoft skills (PowerPoint, Excel, and Word).
  • Strong communication skills, strong business knowledge, and ability to multitask.
  • A team player who is also comfortable taking individual ownership.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with multiple senior stakeholders, including portfolio managers, legal, and compliance.
