The ideal candidate will support and lead the development of roadway and ITS design plans, 3D models, and associated documentation for state DOTs, regional transportation agencies, and municipal clients.

You will work closely with engineers, project managers, and other designers to produce high-quality, constructible designs for a variety of transportation projects, including freeway corridors, arterials, interchanges, managed lanes, and technology-enabled corridors.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Roadway & Geometric Design - Develop horizontal and vertical geometry, typical sections, and corridor models using OpenRoads; prepare roadway plan and profile sheets, cross sections, and design details; support geometric evaluations and alternatives analysis.

  • CAD & BIM Production - Produce high-quality design drawings in MicroStation, including layouts, details, signing/striping plans, and staging/maintenance of traffic plans; maintain CAD standards and ensure quality and consistency of deliverables.

  • ITS & Smart Corridor Design - Support the layout and design of ITS infrastructure (CCTV, DMS, detectors, communications cabinets, fiber/communication networks, traffic sensors, and related field devices); coordinate device locations, power/communication routing, and integration with roadway design.

  • 3D Modeling & Digital Delivery - Create and manage 3D corridor models, surfaces, and digital terrain models in OpenRoads; contribute to model-based deliverables and digital twins as required by clients.

  • Coordination & Collaboration - Work closely with engineers, planners, and other designers to integrate roadway, ITS, drainage, utilities, and structures; participate in internal coordination meetings and design reviews.

  • Standards & Compliance - Apply applicable design manuals and standards (e.g., AASHTO, MUTCD, state DOT standards, local agency requirements); ensure CAD and BIM work adheres to project and client standards.

  • Quality & Documentation - Assist with quality control of drawings and models; maintain organized project files, design data, and revision logs; contribute to design calculations, quantities, and engineering reports as needed.

  • Support for Construction - Prepare quantities, tabulations, and design details to support engineer-of-record; assist with responses to RFIs and the development of as-built documentation, where applicable.

Required Qualifications:

  • Associate's degree or technical diploma in Civil Engineering Technology, Drafting/Design, or related field; equivalent combination of education and relevant experience will be considered.

  • 5+ years of experience in transportation design with primary focus on roadway and/or highway projects; demonstrated experience working on DOT or public agency transportation projects.

  • Advanced proficiency in Bentley OpenRoads Designer for roadway/corridor modeling; strong proficiency in MicroStation for plan production; ability to manage and work within complex reference file structures and level/layer standards.

  • Hands-on experience supporting Intelligent Transportation Systems design (e.g., CCTV, DMS, detectors, communications, field cabinets, and network layouts) integrated with roadway projects.

  • Strong understanding of roadway design elements (alignment, profiles, cross sections, typical sections, grading); ability to read and interpret engineering plans, standards, and specifications.

  • Effective written and verbal communication skills; ability to collaborate within multi-disciplinary teams across offices; strong organizational skills and attention to detail.

Preferred Experience/Skills:

  • 8+ years of experience in transportation/highway design; prior experience on complex corridors, managed lanes, express lanes, or freeway reconstruction projects.

  • Experience with connected corridors, smart work zones, or advanced traffic management systems (ATMS); familiarity with ITS architectures, device spacing, and siting considerations.

  • Experience working with specific state DOT (e.g., Caltrans, TxDOT, GDOT, FDOT, etc.) and local agency standards and CAD requirements; familiarity with AASHTO Green Book, Roadside Design Guide, MUTCD.

  • Exposure to other Bentley tools (InRoads, ProjectWise), GIS platforms, or traffic/operations software is a plus.
