Job description

The Cook County Department of Corrections, commonly known as Cook County Jail, is located at 2700 South California Avenue in Chicago, Illinois. Spanning 96 acres and eight city blocks, it is one of the largest single-site pre-detention facilities in the United States, admitting roughly 100,000 detainees annually with an average daily population of around 9,000.


The mission of the Cook County Department of Corrections is to ensure the safety of the citizens, correctional staff, and individuals in custody of Cook County. We provide a central location for screening and classification of all defendants and a safe, secure, humane, positive, efficient and constitutionally-operated corrections department with a highly qualified, well-trained and dedicated staff.

Responsibilities:

  • Security & Inmate Supervision: Monitor and direct the daily activities of incarcerated individuals, including work assignments, recreation, and meals. Conduct regular headcounts to ensure accountability and prevent escapes.
  • Contraband Interdiction: Search inmates, visitors, mail, and housing units for prohibited items such as weapons, drugs, or cellular devices.
  • Facility Inspections: Routinely check cells and perimeter fencing for tampering, structural damage, or sanitation and safety hazards.
  • Conflict Resolution & Enforcement: Settle disputes between inmates and enforce facility rules. Issue disciplinary actions when rules are broken and use de-escalation tactics to defuse hostile situations.
  • Emergency Response: Act as first responders during fights, medical emergencies, fires, or disturbances. This includes restoring order, performing CPR/first aid, and using physical or chemical force when necessary to protect staff and inmates.
  • Transportation & Escort: Safely escort inmates within the secured area or transport them to outside facilities, such as courtrooms or medical appointments.
  • Record Keeping: Write detailed daily logs and incident reports tracking inmate behavior, safety hazards, and unusual events


Requirements:

  • Be a United States Citizen
  • Be 21 years of age or older.
  • Have a valid high school diploma or GED
  • Have a valid drivers license
  • Have a valid firearm card, or be able to obtain a FOID card prior to hire date
