Job description

Job Summary

Under the direction of the Chair of the Division of Hematology and Oncology, the Attending Physician performs professional work in medical, educational, and research activities. The physician is an expert in the care and treatment of patients with cancer and benign hematological conditions, providing knowledgeable, compassionate, and holistic care. Responsibilities include inpatient and outpatient clinical care, electronic consultative care, and participation in clinical trials to investigate new and better treatment strategies. The physician will be credentialed in Internal Medicine and Hematology/Oncology Medicine at Stroger and Provident Hospitals of Cook County, and may provide ambulatory services at sites outside the central campus.

Typical Duties
  • Staff outpatient care sessions in the sub-specialty clinic, providing direct patient care and supervising trainees.
  • Provide care for inpatient oncology and/or hematology consult services.
  • Support care of patients throughout the Cook County Health network through direct care, consultation, or electronic consultation.
  • Set standards and ensure the provision of consistent high-quality care to patients with hematology and oncology disorders by educating, assisting, and guiding primary care physicians.
  • Supervise and train hematology/oncology subspecialty fellows, rotating residents, medical students, and nurse clinicians.
  • Supervise infusion center chemotherapy nursing staff. Maintain accurate medical records and timely completion of billing encounter forms.
  • Participate in the division and hospital performance improvement programs.
  • Attend meetings and participate on assigned committees.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) from an accredited college or university is required.
  • Licensed as a Physician and Surgeon in the State of Illinois prior to starting employment is required.
  • Must be cleared for privileges by Medical Staff Services by the start of employment is required.
  • Board certification by the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM) in a Hematology or Oncology subspecialty, or board eligibility in a pathway leading to certification within two (2) years of starting employment is required.
  • Experience with participation in National Cancer Institute-sponsored clinical trials is required.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with the Cerner electronic medical record is preferred.

Physical and Environmental Demands

This position operates within a healthcare environment. The incumbent is responsible for adherence to all hospital and department safety requirements, including compliance with personal protective equipment, hand washing and sanitizing practices, and any other work‐area safety precautions as specified by hospital policy and departmental procedures.

Veteran Preference

Preference is given to honorably discharged Veterans who have served at least six months of continuous service. To receive Veteran Preference, applicants must: meet the minimum qualifications for the position; identify themselves as a Veteran on the application; attach a copy of a DD‑214, DD‑215, or NGB‑22 (with an honorable discharge status) or a valid state ID card or driver’s license that identifies the holder as a Veteran. Veterans must provide original discharge papers or state ID at the time of interview. If the required documents are not attached, Veteran Preference will not be applied.
