Job description

General Summary

Southern States Cooperative is seeking a highly motivated Department Manager to lead the daily operations of our Gas & Convenience Store located on Buckeystown Pike in Frederick, Maryland. This leadership role is responsible for overseeing all aspects of the convenience store and fuel station operation, including customer service, staffing, merchandising, inventory management, food and beverage operations, fuel sales, safety, and overall site performance.

The ideal candidate will bring strong operational leadership, a customer-first mindset, and the ability to create a clean, safe, fast-paced, and welcoming environment for customers and employees alike.

Essential Job Functions

  • Manage and oversee daily operations of the convenience store and fuel station.
  • Lead, coach, and develop store employees to deliver excellent customer service and operational execution.
  • Monitor store sales, fuel sales, margins, and inventory levels to achieve financial and operational goals.
  • Ensure proper stocking, merchandising, pricing, and presentation of all store products and displays.
  • Maintain high standards for cleanliness, organization, food safety, and overall facility appearance.
  • Supervise cash handling procedures, point-of-sale operations, shift balancing, and inventory controls.
  • Coordinate employee scheduling and staffing to meet business demands.
  • Ensure compliance with all company policies, safety procedures, environmental standards, and regulatory requirements.
  • Monitor fuel operations and work closely with vendors and service providers to maintain equipment and site functionality.
  • Handle customer concerns professionally and resolve issues in a timely manner.
  • Support promotional initiatives, seasonal merchandising, and local marketing efforts to drive business growth.
  • Serve as a key-holder responsible for opening and closing the facility.
  • Foster a positive team environment focused on accountability, operational excellence, and customer satisfaction.

A combination of completed coursework and relevant experience may be considered in lieu of degree.

Requirements

Education & Experience

  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • Associate's Degree or Bachelor's Degree in Business Management, Retail Management, or related field preferred.
  • Previous experience managing employees, inventory, and daily business operations preferred.

Skills & Qualifications

  • Strong leadership and team development skills.
  • Excellent customer service and communication abilities.
  • Experience managing inventory, merchandising, and cash handling procedures.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced retail environment while maintaining attention to detail.
  • Basic computer proficiency including POS systems and Microsoft Office products.
