Controller information

What is a controller?

A controller is high-level accounting position in a firm or company. They often report directly to the CFO (Chief Financial Officer) and are responsible for budgets, audits, and financial reports, as well as ensuring the company complies with all tax codes and regulations.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a controller, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Controller, you need a strong background in accounting principles, financial analysis, and regulatory compliance, typically supported by a bachelor's degree in accounting or finance and often a CPA certification. Proficiency with ERP systems, advanced Excel, and financial reporting software is essential for managing complex financial data. Exceptional organizational skills, attention to detail, and effective communication set top Controllers apart. These skills and qualities ensure accurate financial oversight, compliance, and strategic decision-making for organizational success.

What are some common challenges controllers face when managing financial reporting and compliance?

Controllers often encounter challenges in ensuring the accuracy and timeliness of financial reports, particularly when juggling complex transactions or multiple entities. Staying current with evolving accounting standards and regulatory requirements can also be demanding, as it requires continual learning and adaptation. Additionally, Controllers must coordinate closely with cross-functional teams, such as auditors and department heads, to address discrepancies and streamline processes, making strong communication and problem-solving skills essential.

What is the difference between Controller vs Bookkeeper?

AspectControllerBookkeeper
CredentialsTypically requires a bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, or related field; CPA or CMA certifications are commonUsually requires a high school diploma or associate degree; certifications are less common
Work EnvironmentWorks in corporate finance departments, overseeing accounting teamsWorks in small businesses or accounting firms, handling day-to-day transaction recording
ResponsibilitiesFinancial reporting, budgeting, internal controls, and strategic financial planningRecording financial transactions, maintaining ledgers, and reconciling accounts

The Controller and Bookkeeper roles differ mainly in scope and seniority. Controllers oversee financial strategies and reporting, requiring advanced credentials and experience. Bookkeepers focus on recording daily transactions and maintaining accurate records. While both are essential for financial management, Controllers have broader responsibilities and higher qualifications, often managing teams and ensuring compliance.

Is a controller a high position?

A controller is a senior management role responsible for overseeing an organization’s accounting and financial reporting. It is generally considered a high-level position, often reporting to the CFO and requiring extensive financial expertise and certifications such as CPA or CMA.

Reporting directly to the VP Finance, this is an exceptional opportunity for an experienced Controller to take ownership of the finance function within a high-growth international business. You'll lead financial reporting, treasury, compliance, controls, and process improvement across multiple global entities while partnering closely with senior leadership on strategic initiatives.

This is far more than a traditional Controller position. You'll play a key role in building scalable finance processes, driving automation and continuous improvement, mentoring a growing team, and helping shape the financial infrastructure needed to support the organization's continued global expansion.

???? Global Impact – Join a fast-growing international business with operations spanning multiple countries and markets.

???? Build & Influence – Play a pivotal role in developing a world-class finance function while partnering directly with executive leadership.

???? Purpose-Driven – Be part of a company that's helping businesses around the world reduce their environmental footprint through innovative, sustainable solutions.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Lead the month-end, quarter-end, and year-end close across multiple international entities, ensuring accurate and timely financial reporting.
  • Prepare consolidated financial statements, management reporting, variance analysis, and executive commentary for senior leadership.
  • Own treasury activities, including global cash flow forecasting, working capital management, and banking relationships.
  • Lead the annual audit process and manage relationships with external auditors, tax advisors, and financial institutions.
  • Strengthen financial controls, governance, and compliance across multiple jurisdictions.
  • Drive continuous improvement across finance systems, reporting processes, and automation initiatives.
  • Partner with leaders across operations, commercial, marketing, and supply chain to provide strategic financial insights.
  • Prepare board-level reporting and support financing and future growth initiatives.
  • Lead, mentor, and develop the finance team while building scalable processes to support international growth.

WHAT YOU BRING

We're looking for a commercially minded finance leader who enjoys building, improving, and scaling finance functions within a fast-paced, entrepreneurial environment.

The successful candidate will bring:

  • CPA designation (or international equivalent).
  • 7+ years of progressive accounting and finance experience, including leadership within a Controller or Finance Manager capacity.
  • Experience managing consolidated financial reporting across multiple entities.
  • Strong technical accounting knowledge, including IFRS and/or US GAAP.
  • Experience with multi-currency accounting and international operations.
  • A proven track record of strengthening financial controls and improving reporting processes.
  • Strong systems aptitude with advanced Excel skills and experience working with modern accounting software and ERP platforms.
  • An engaging leadership style with the ability to build relationships across all areas of the business.
  • A proactive, hands-on approach with the ability to thrive in a dynamic, growth-oriented environment.

Bonus points for experience in:

  • Consumer products, manufacturing, distribution, or inventory-based businesses.
  • International supply chain finance.
  • E-commerce and/or B2B business models.
  • US tax compliance, transfer pricing, or global finance operations.
  • Finance transformation, systems implementation, or AI-enabled automation.

This is a rare opportunity to join a business that's making a genuine impact while continuing to grow on a global scale. You'll have the opportunity to influence strategic decisions, build a best-in-class finance function, and work alongside an ambitious leadership team that values innovation, collaboration, and continuous improvement.

In return, you'll enjoy:

  • A highly visible leadership role with direct access to executive leadership.
  • The opportunity to build and modernize a world-class finance function.
  • Exposure to international operations and complex, multi-entity finance.
  • A collaborative, entrepreneurial culture where your ideas are encouraged and valued.
  • Long-term career growth with a rapidly expanding global organization.
  • Competitive compensation and comprehensive benefits package.
