Controller - Commercial Construction

Salary: $90,000 - $130,000 per year

Location: Tempe, AZ

We are currently conducting a Controller search for a Commercial General Contractor based in Tempe, AZ. Reporting directly to the CFO, this role will oversee a small accounting team and be responsible for core accounting operations including month-end close, job costing, accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, and financial reporting. The Controller will also play a key role in financial planning, performance analysis, and an upcoming ERP system conversion. This is an in-office role, 5 days a week at their office in Tempe, Arizona. Responsibilities:

  • Oversee month-end close, general ledger, accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, and overall accounting operations.
  • Lead annual budgeting, forecasting, financial modeling, and profitability analysis.
  • Manage job costing, work-in-progress (WIP) reporting, and project profitability tracking.
  • Monitor financial performance metrics and maintain target profit margins.
  • Develop and manage cash flow planning and capital strategies to support company growth.
  • Ensure compliance with GAAP, tax regulations, and financial reporting standards.
  • Implement and maintain strong internal controls and financial risk management processes.
  • Partner with operational leaders to ensure project-level financial accountability.
  • Identify cost-saving opportunities and operational efficiencies through financial analysis.
  • Lead ERP implementation and optimize financial systems, automation, and reporting capabilities.
  • Oversee payroll administration and performance-based compensation structures.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor's in Accounting, Finance, or related is required
  • CPA a plus
  • 7+ years' of accounting/finance experience
  • 3+ years' commercial real estate construction accounting experience (including job costing, WIP reporting, etc.), ideally working for a General Contractor.
  • 2+ years' of leadership experience
  • Experience implementing process improvement
