Position Overview

The Assistant Controller plays a key role in supporting the Controller and ensuring the financial health of the organization. This position oversees day-to-day accounting operations with a strong emphasis on construction job costing, Work-in-Progress (WIP) reporting, subcontractor management, and financial reporting. The ideal candidate is detail-oriented, collaborative, and experienced in the financial operations of a construction company.

Key Responsibilities

  • Support the Controller in managing daily accounting operations, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll backup, and cash flow.
  • Prepare and maintain accurate job cost reports, project financials, and Work-in-Progress (WIP) schedules.
  • Assist with financial forecasting, budgeting, and long-term growth planning.
  • Monitor and reconcile general ledger accounts while identifying and resolving accounting discrepancies.
  • Develop, maintain, and improve internal accounting controls, policies, and procedures.
  • Assist with quarterly reviews, annual audits, tax preparation, and financial reporting.
  • Manage sales tax reporting, business licenses, and state registrations.
  • Partner with Operations and Project Management teams to ensure accurate job costing and financial compliance.
  • Provide guidance and support to the accounting team while serving as a backup to the Controller.
  • Perform other accounting and finance-related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Business, or a related field (or equivalent experience).
  • Five or more years of progressive accounting experience, preferably in the construction industry.
  • Strong understanding of construction accounting, including job costing, WIP reporting, and percentage-of-completion revenue recognition.
  • Experience with construction accounting software and Microsoft Office, particularly Excel.
  • Knowledge of subcontractor compliance, lien waivers, and construction financial processes.
  • Knowledge of certified payroll process.
  • Experience leading or mentoring accounting staff is preferred.
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to work effectively across finance and operations.
