Who is higher, CFO or controller?

In a company, the CFO (Chief Financial Officer) is higher than the controller. The CFO oversees the entire financial strategy and reports to the CEO, while the controller manages accounting operations and financial reporting under the CFO's direction.

What is the role of a controller in a company?

A controller in a company is responsible for overseeing financial reporting, accounting operations, and internal controls. They ensure accurate financial statements, compliance with regulations, and often manage budgeting and audit processes. Controllers typically have strong accounting skills and may hold certifications such as CPA.

A controller is a senior management role responsible for overseeing a company's accounting and financial reporting. It is generally considered a high-level position within an organization, often reporting to the CFO and requiring extensive financial expertise and certifications such as CPA. The role involves strategic decision-making and managing finance teams.

How much is the salary of a controller?

The salary of a controller typically ranges from $80,000 to $180,000 annually, depending on factors such as experience, industry, and location. Job description

What we do

Darkhorse Analytics is home to two specialized organizations, each turning data into decisions. At Darkhorse Visualization, we turn complex data into tools that change minds. At Darkhorse Emergency, we implement our proprietary software and solve interesting and challenging business problems for a wide variety of fire and emergency clients. At Darkhorse, you will have an outsized impact. You will be trusted, encouraged, and empowered to make a difference. You will do meaningful work as you create a company you can be proud of.

What you'll be doing

As Controller, you will lead and execute the day-to-day financial operations across Darkhorse Analytics. This is a hands-on role where you'll move between operational accounting work, financial analysis, process improvement, and strategic support for company leadership.ย You will work closely with leadership across both Darkhorse Emergency and Darkhorse Visualization to ensure the company has accurate financial information, strong financial controls, and scalable systems to support growth.

Work at Darkhorse is diverse and ever-changing. One day you may be reviewing complex intercompany transactions, improving forecasting models, or navigating cross-border accounting requirements. The next day you may be improving internal processes with AI tools, preparing Board reporting, or supporting strategic decision-making on growth initiatives.

You will take ownership of accounting and finance responsibilities from start to finish, including:

  • Leading month end and year end close processes across Canadian and US entities.
  • Preparing financial reporting packages, variance analysis, KPIs, forecasts, and cash flow reporting.
  • Managing full cycle accounting activities including reconciliations, accruals, deferred revenue, foreign exchange adjustments, intercompany transactions, and tax accruals.
  • Supporting budgeting, scenario planning, and financial modeling.
  • Preparing and reviewing annual Canadian and US financial statements and tax filings.
  • Monitoring cash flow, approving payments, and managing transfers between entities and bank accounts.
  • Supporting leadership with financial insight, strategic analysis, and operational decision-making.
  • Coordinating with external stakeholders including bookkeepers, auditors, lawyers, banks, insurance providers, and accounting firms.
  • Supporting payroll administration, compensation changes, onboarding/offboarding coordination, and benefits administration.
  • Leading or supporting grant applications, reporting, SR&ED administration, and regulatory compliance activities.
  • Reviewing and responding to CRA and IRS correspondence.
  • Improving internal accounting systems, financial controls, and operational processes.
  • Leveraging AI and automation tools to streamline financial reporting, analysis, and workflows.
  • Building strong internal relationships and helping support a culture of ownership, transparency, and continuous improvement.

As a growing company, we expect you to spend a meaningful portion of your time improving our systems, processes, and ways of working.

What we look for

We believe the right person is not defined only by years of experience or education. We look for people who are adaptable, quality oriented and motivated to grow. Here are some of the things that will help you stand out:

  • You have a CPA designation and experience in full cycle accounting and financial reporting.
  • You understand Canadian GAAP and are comfortable navigating accounting situations in a small-medium business environment.
  • Exposure to US accounting, tax, or multi-entity environments would be considered an asset.
  • You are highly detail-oriented while still being able to see the bigger business picture.
  • You enjoy problem-solving, identifying patterns, and digging into root causes.
  • You are comfortable operating in ambiguity and balancing competing priorities.
  • You embrace AI and modern tools to improve workflows, reporting, and efficiency.
  • You can communicate financial concepts clearly to both financial and non-financial audiences.
  • You are highly organized with a strong professional sense of discretion and tact when dealing with confidential data.
  • You value ownership and accountability, and take pride in doing excellent work even when nobody's watching.
  • You are collaborative, supportive, and able to build trust across teams.
  • You genuinely enjoy learning and continuously improving.
  • You share and live our values every day.

Ideally:

  • You have experience with budgeting, forecasting, and financial modeling.
  • You have exposure to payroll, grants, SR&ED, or cross-border accounting requirements.
  • You have experience improving accounting processes or implementing automation.

What we offer

  • Competitive salaries within a transparent salary environment
  • Competitive benefits and a growth-sharing program
  • Unlimited vacation
  • Flexible working conditions; hybrid or in-person in Edmonton
  • Unlimited career opportunities in a high-growth company
  • The ability to make an impact and do work that matters

We look forward to hearing from you!
