Controller Consultant - Bay Area, CA
Compensation: $150,000-$180,000 base salary, depending on experience
Location: Bay Area, CA | Hybrid with regular client-site work
Employment Type: Full-Time
NOW CFO is seeking an experienced Controller Consultant to support clients throughout the Bay Area. This role requires a strong mix of strategic financial leadership and hands-on accounting expertise.
Construction industry experience is a major priority for this position. We are especially interested in candidates with Controller-level experience supporting general contractors, specialty contractors, developers, homebuilders, or other project-based businesses.
Responsibilities
  • Lead accounting and financial operations for multiple clients.
  • Oversee month-end and year-end close, financial reporting, reconciliations, and general ledger activity.
  • Support construction clients with job costing, WIP reporting, revenue recognition, project profitability, budgeting, and cash flow management.
  • Prepare and review GAAP-compliant financial statements.
  • Improve accounting processes, internal controls, reporting, and financial systems.
  • Partner with executives and operational leaders to provide financial insight and decision support.
  • Remain hands-on with journal entries, reconciliations, schedules, and reporting as needed.
  • Support clients across industries such as construction, real estate, technology, SaaS, manufacturing, professional services, distribution, and nonprofit.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field.
  • Strong Controller, Assistant Controller, or senior accounting leadership experience.
  • Meaningful construction accounting experience strongly preferred.
  • Strong knowledge of job costing, WIP, project accounting, revenue recognition, and GAAP.
  • Experience leading close and preparing financial statements.
  • Experience working across multiple companies or industries strongly preferred.
  • Strong communication and client-facing skills.
  • Ability to quickly adapt to different clients, systems, and accounting environments.
  • Comfortable traveling to client locations throughout the Bay Area.
Ideal Candidate
The ideal candidate is a hands-on Controller with strong construction accounting experience combined with experience across several other industries. They should be highly comfortable with job costing, WIP, project margins, close, and financial reporting, while also having the versatility to step into companies in different industries and quickly understand their accounting operations.
