What is contractual remote financial planning?

Contractual remote financial planning refers to providing financial planning services on a contract basis while working remotely, rather than as a permanent, in-office employee. Professionals in this role typically help clients manage their finances, investments, and long-term goals through virtual meetings and digital communication tools. This arrangement offers flexibility for both the advisor and the client, often allowing for a broader client base and adaptable work schedules. Contractual remote financial planners may work independently or with financial firms, and they usually handle tasks such as budgeting, retirement planning, tax strategies, and investment advice.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals in a contractual remote financial planning role, and how can they be addressed?

Contractual remote financial planners often encounter challenges such as building trust with clients virtually, managing multiple client portfolios independently, and staying up-to-date with regulatory changes across different regions. To address these, strong digital communication skills, disciplined time management, and continuous professional development are essential. Leveraging secure financial planning software and maintaining clear, transparent communication channels can also help foster client confidence and streamline workflow. Regularly participating in online industry webinars and forums can keep you informed about best practices and changing regulations.

Senior Financial Planner, Advisor Services

Formative (formerly First Affirmative)

Location: Remote or in person New York City (preferred).

Type: Full-Time

About Us

First Affirmative has been a pioneer in values-aligned investing since 1988 with over $1B in AUM. Through our national advisor network, we've spent over three decades helping financial advisors and their clients build portfolios that reflect both their financial goals and their values.

Now, as Formative, we're entering our next chapter focused on growth for impact. YourStake, the leading software company in the values-aligned wealthtech space, has acquired Formative to build something new: a modern, tech-enabled platform purpose-built for values-aligned financial advisors. Think of it as the infrastructure, technology, and expert operational support that lets independent advisors focus entirely on their clients, while we handle the investment operations, planning, and back-office.

We strive to be the leading hub for values-aligned advisors, helping clients navigate this transformative time for the world with holistic financial life planning, and drive impact through centralizing shareholder engagement and private high-impact investing efforts.

The Role

We're building a centralized financial planning team that serves our entire advisor networkand we need a senior expert to anchor it.

As our Senior Financial Planner, Advisor Services, you will be the planning brain behind our platform. Our affiliated advisors will submit cases to you, and you'll produce comprehensive, high-quality financial planning output the kind of work that's genuinely better and faster than what the advisors could produce themselves. That's the value proposition: advisors trust you with their clients' planning because your expertise and efficiency make delegation a no-brainer.

You won't be client-facing. You'll work directly with advisors, running analyses and generating reports across tax planning, retirement projections, estate scenarios, and more. You'll also help shape how we build and scale this functiondefining workflows, evaluating tools, and mentoring junior planners as the team grows.

What You'll DoFinancial Planning Delivery
  • Produce comprehensive financial plans on behalf of affiliated advisors across retirement, tax, estate, education funding, insurance, cash flow, Social Security analysis, and more.
  • Run detailed tax analyses including Roth conversion modeling, tax-efficient withdrawal strategies, income timing, and charitable giving scenarios.
  • Build estate planning scenarios and coordinate with advisors on trust, gifting, and wealth transfer strategies.
  • Review client documents (tax returns, account statements, estate documents) to identify planning opportunities.
Advisor Partnership
  • Serve as a trusted planning expert to a diverse group of independent advisors, each with their own brand and client style.
  • Prepare advisors for client meetings with clear, presentation-ready deliverables and talking points.
  • Build credibility as the person advisors actively want to delegate tobecause you make their practice better.
Platform Building & Leadership
  • Help define and refine the workflows, templates, and quality standards for our centralized planning function.
  • Evaluate and optimize our financial planning technology stack as we continue to build the platform.
  • Contribute to advisor training and onboardinghelping new network advisors understand how to work effectively with our planning team.
  • Mentor and train junior planners as we grow the team. This is a ground-floor leadership opportunity.
Who You AreRequired
  • CFP certification (active and in good standing).
  • 35 years of hands-on experience building comprehensive financial plans in a professional setting (RIA, broker-dealer, or planning firm).
  • Strong working knowledge of financial planning software in the categories of comprehensive planning, tax planning, and estate planning (e.g., RightCapital, Holistiplan, Wealth.com, eMoney, or similar tools).
  • Ability to translate complex planning concepts into clear, actionable deliverables that advisors can confidently present to clients.
  • Comfort working across multiple advisor relationships simultaneously, each with different styles and client bases.

Preferred
  • Series 65 or 7 & 63
  • Experience working in a multi-advisor or enterprise RIA environment (not just supporting a single advisor).
  • Familiarity with and enthusiasm for impact investing and values-aligned financial planning.
  • A track record of improving processesyou've built templates, streamlined workflows, or introduced tools that made a planning team more efficient.
  • Interest in mentoring or leading others. You don't need management experience yet, but you want it.

  • Leadership trajectory: As the team grows, you grow with it. We expect this person to lead a planning operations team.
  • Mission that matters: First Affirmative has been at this since 1988. Values-aligned investing isn't a marketing angle for usit's the entire reason the firm exists.
  • Tech-forward environment: YourStake's technology and data are at the core of what we're building. You'll work with modern tools and help shape the stack.
  • Compensation: $85,000$105,000 base salary, plus performance-based bonus. Competitive benefits including health, dental, vision, 401(k), and paid time off.
