What is a contract worker?

Contract workers are individuals hired to perform specific tasks or projects for a business on a temporary basis, usually under a contract that outlines the terms of their work. Unlike full-time employees, contract workers are not typically entitled to company benefits such as health insurance or paid leave. They have more flexibility in their schedules and may work for multiple clients at once. Contract workers are responsible for managing their own taxes and may operate as independent contractors or through staffing agencies.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a contract worker, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Contract Worker, you generally need strong expertise in your specific field, the ability to manage your workload independently, and relevant educational or professional qualifications. Familiarity with project management tools, basic accounting software, and digital collaboration platforms is often essential. Excellent time management, communication, and adaptability help contract workers stand out by ensuring they meet client expectations and deadlines. These skills and qualities are crucial for delivering high-quality work, maintaining client relationships, and successfully navigating the flexibility and uncertainty of contract-based employment.

What are some common challenges contract workers face, and how can they effectively manage them?

Contract workers often navigate challenges such as adjusting to new work environments quickly, managing inconsistent workloads, and ensuring clear communication with multiple clients or supervisors. To effectively manage these issues, it's important to develop strong organizational skills, clarify project expectations upfront, and maintain open, professional communication. Building a reliable network and staying adaptable can also help contract workers succeed across diverse assignments and potentially lead to long-term opportunities.

Job description

.

About the Role:

We're looking for a motivated, detailoriented individual to join our Contracts & Proposals team, facilitating the analysis and operations of how we deliver for our customers. This role is ideal for either earlycareer professionals / recent college graduates who enjoy organizing information, working within enterprise systems, communicating with internal and external partners, and managing data, and seasoned professionals with a proven track record in this kind of position. No prior experience in contracts or aerospace is required, we'll teach you everything you need to know.

This role is a launchpad: you'll build skills in business operations, customer interaction, order management, enterprise tools, and the fundamentals of government and commercial contracting. Many team members grow quickly into analyst, specialist, or management tracks in Contracts or adjacent disciplines such as Finance, Program Management, Operations, or Supply Chain.

What You'll Do:

  • Review and enter incoming purchase orders and customer data with accuracy and timeliness.
  • Manage sales orders, customer data, and basic order administration within enterprise systems (e.g., SAP).
  • Assist with simple data reporting, tracking, and reconciliation (AR tracking, open-order status, data cleanup).
  • Monitor and update customer-facing portals (order status, documentation uploads, etc.).
  • Coordinate routine communications with customers and internal partners to ensure clarity and alignment.
  • Support proposal activity for smaller, routine customer requests.
  • Maintain organized records and documentation according to company standards.
  • Assist with basic export/shipment-related paperwork (training provided).
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure commitments are met.

What Makes You a Great Fit:

The "raw materials" of your skills and who you are matter more than your major or previous industry experience. You'll thrive if you have:

  • Strong communication skills and an approachable, professional demeanor.
  • Initiative (you like figuring things out and improving processes).
  • High proficiency in Microsoft Excel (pivot tables, VLOOKUP/xlookup, large data sets, basic reporting).
  • Comfort navigating enterprise-grade systems or learning new digital tools quickly.
  • Strong organizational habits and attention to detail.
  • Problem-solving mindset and willingness to ask questions.
  • A collaborative attitude and desire to grow a career in a business operations or contract-related field.

What We'll Teach You:

No prior contracts or aerospace knowledge is expected.

You'll receive training and hands-on experience in:

  • Contract fundamentals (commercial & government).
  • Our products, customers, and industry basics.
  • SAP and related enterprise tools.
  • Export documents and compliance basics.
  • ITAR/EAR fundamentals.
  • How proposals, pricing, and order management work in an advanced aerospace manufacturing environment.

.

Education Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree (any major welcome, including business, communications, data analytics, liberal arts, STEM, etc.)
  • OR relevant professional experience in administrative, customer support, or business operations roles.

Compensation:

Entry-level range: $40,000-$65,000, depending on experience.

Designed for fast learning, fast growth, and future career mobility.
