What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Contract Robot Programmer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Contract Robot Programmer, you need expertise in robotics programming languages (such as RAPID, KRL, or FANUC TP), automation systems, and a strong background in engineering or computer science. Familiarity with industrial robot controllers, PLCs, simulation software, and certifications like FANUC Certified Robot Operator or Siemens PLC are often required. Strong problem-solving skills, adaptability, and effective communication set standout programmers apart when collaborating with clients and troubleshooting in diverse environments. These skills ensure efficient, safe, and customized automation solutions that meet client specifications and industry standards.

What are some common challenges faced in contract robot programming projects?

Contract robot programming professionals often encounter challenges such as adapting to different clients' proprietary systems, quickly learning new programming environments, and troubleshooting unexpected integration issues on-site. Projects may involve working with various robot brands, each with unique programming languages and safety protocols, which requires flexibility and ongoing learning. Additionally, tight deadlines and the need to coordinate closely with engineering teams and operators can add complexity, making strong communication and problem-solving skills essential for success.

What is contract robot programming?

Contract robot programming refers to hiring specialized professionals or firms on a contractual basis to design, write, and implement software that controls robotic systems. These programmers typically work on industrial robots used in manufacturing, automation, or other specialized applications. They may be responsible for programming robots to perform specific tasks, optimizing performance, and ensuring safety standards are met. Contract work allows companies to access expert skills for short-term projects without committing to full-time hires.

Job description

Robot Programmer – Contract / Immediate Need

This is an immediate contract opportunity for a strong Robot Programmer to support automated robot cells across two manufacturing plants. The role will focus on maintaining, troubleshooting, programming, and optimizing production robotic systems, with the current robot mix consisting of approximately 60% FANUC robots, 30% KUKA robots, and 10% Universal Robots cobots.

The robot cells use a significant amount of FANUC iRVision, so hands-on experience with robotic vision systems is highly preferred. This contract could potentially turn into a longer-term role based on performance, business needs, or future direct-hire decisions.

Responsibilities

  • Program, troubleshoot, and optimize FANUC robots, KUKA robots, and Universal Robots cobots across multiple automated manufacturing cells.
  • Support robot cells between both plant locations to improve uptime, cycle time, quality, and overall equipment performance.
  • Diagnose and resolve issues related to robot programming, robot motion, teach pendant programming, path optimization, and production faults.
  • Work extensively with FANUC iRVision systems, including vision setup, calibration support, troubleshooting, and process adjustments.
  • Modify and improve existing robot programs to support production changes, quality improvements, and automation efficiency.
  • Support robotic cell commissioning, debugging, recovery, and continuous improvement activities.
  • Collaborate with maintenance, controls, engineering, and production teams to resolve automation issues quickly.
  • Assist with robotic process improvements involving end-of-arm tooling, part presentation, vision guidance, and robotic pick-and-place or material handling applications.
  • Document program changes, troubleshooting steps, and recommended improvements as needed.
  • Provide hands-on support in a fast-paced manufacturing environment with an immediate need for reliable robot programming expertise.

Qualifications

  • Hands-on experience as a Robot Programmer, Robotics Technician, Automation Technician, or similar role in a manufacturing environment.
  • Strong programming and troubleshooting experience with FANUC robots required.
  • Experience with FANUC iRVision strongly preferred.
  • Working knowledge of KUKA robot programming and troubleshooting highly desired.
  • Experience with Universal Robots cobots or collaborative robot systems preferred.
  • Ability to read, modify, and troubleshoot robot programs using a teach pendant.
  • Experience supporting automated robot cells, robotic work cells, or industrial automation equipment.
  • Strong understanding of robot safety, recovery procedures, motion programming, frames, tooling, and vision-guided robotics.
  • Ability to support multiple plant locations as needed.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to work independently in an urgent production support environment.
  • Contract availability for an immediate start preferred.
