What is a Contract Revit API Developer?

A Contract Revit API Developer is a professional who specializes in developing custom tools, plugins, or automation scripts for Autodesk Revit using its Application Programming Interface (API) on a contract or freelance basis. They help architecture, engineering, and construction (AEC) firms enhance their Revit workflows, automate repetitive tasks, and integrate Revit with other software systems. By leveraging the Revit API, these developers can tailor solutions to meet specific project or office needs, improving efficiency and productivity. Typically, they are hired for short-term projects or specific development goals.

What are some common challenges faced by Contract Revit API Developers when integrating custom tools into existing BIM workflows?

Contract Revit API Developers often encounter challenges such as ensuring compatibility between custom add-ins and multiple versions of Revit used by clients, as well as managing performance issues when handling large and complex models. Additionally, understanding and adapting to the unique workflows and standards of each client can require quick learning and flexibility. Effective communication with architects, engineers, and BIM managers is essential to gather accurate requirements and deliver solutions that truly enhance productivity.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Contract Revit API Developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Contract Revit API Developer, you need strong proficiency in Autodesk Revit, programming skills (especially in C# or .NET), and a solid understanding of BIM workflows. Familiarity with Revit API, version control systems like Git, and relevant certifications such as Autodesk Certified Professional are typically required. Exceptional problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective communication help developers collaborate with architects and engineers and deliver tailored solutions. These skills are crucial for creating efficient, custom automation tools that enhance BIM processes and project productivity.

Sterling Engineering is hiring a Revit Family Development Engineer for a specialized, industry-leading construction equipment provider undergoing a major digital transformation. This is a unique, high-impact project where youโ€™ll take full ownership of building a comprehensive parametric Revit libraryโ€”directly shaping how engineering and construction teams interact with complex equipment in a BIM environment. If youโ€™re an expert in parametric family creation and want to work on a project with real visibility, autonomy, and long-term impact, this is an outstanding opportunity.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Design and develop a fully parametric Revit family library for complex construction equipment and components
  • Build flexible, production-grade families that adapt to varying project conditions using advanced parameters and formulas
  • Ensure all families are optimized for BIM coordination, performance, and interoperability
  • Develop families that support automated bill of materials (BOM) generation through accurate parameter integration
  • Create nested and shared families with proper scheduling, tagging, and data extraction capabilities
  • Establish and maintain naming conventions, parameter structures, and modeling standards
  • Ensure compatibility across Revit environments and seamless integration into contractor models
  • Develop a Revit project template including sheet layouts, title blocks, and standardized views
  • Configure annotation families, view templates, and documentation standards aligned with current drawing outputs
  • Collaborate with engineering and drafting teams to define requirements and validate deliverables
  • Create user guides, training materials, and recorded sessions for long-term usability
  • Participate in project reviews, milestone deliverables, and continuous improvement of modeling standards
Qualifications:
  • 5+ years of dedicated experience in Revit family creation (not general BIM modeling)
  • Proven expertise building complex parametric families for industrial or mechanical equipment
  • Advanced proficiency with Revit Family Editor, including nested families, shared parameters, and parametric modeling
  • Experience developing BIM-ready content for coordination environments (Navisworks, BIM 360, etc.)
  • Strong understanding of Level of Development (LOD 300โ€“350) standards
  • Experience creating families optimized for performance, scalability, and interoperability
  • Ability to translate 2D drawings or CAD models into Revit-native parametric families
  • Familiarity with AutoCAD and/or 3D CAD tools such as SolidWorks
  • Experience with Dynamo, Revit API, or automation tools is a plus
  • Background in construction equipment, heavy industrial systems, or mechanical design preferred
Qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, disability, or veteran status.
