What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Contract Power Electronics Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Contract Power Electronics Engineer, you need a solid background in electrical engineering, circuit design, and experience with power conversion systems, usually supported by a relevant engineering degree. Familiarity with simulation tools like SPICE, PCB design software such as Altium Designer, and industry certifications like Professional Engineer (PE) are highly valued. Strong problem-solving abilities, effective communication, and adaptability help contractors quickly integrate with new teams and tackle diverse projects. These skills ensure efficient project delivery, technical excellence, and successful client relationships in a fast-paced, project-driven environment.

What are some common challenges Contract Power Electronics Engineers face when working with diverse clients and projects?

Contract Power Electronics Engineers often work with a variety of clients, each with unique requirements, timelines, and technical standards. Adapting quickly to new project scopes and understanding different system architectures can be challenging. Additionally, balancing multiple projects and ensuring clear communication between cross-functional teams—such as hardware, software, and manufacturing—requires strong organizational and interpersonal skills. Staying updated with the latest industry trends and compliance standards is also crucial for success in contract roles.

What is a Contract Power Electronics Engineer?

A Contract Power Electronics Engineer is a specialized professional hired on a temporary basis to design, develop, and test electronic systems and devices that control and convert electric power. These engineers typically work on projects involving power converters, inverters, and motor drives for industries such as automotive, renewable energy, and industrial automation. Contract roles may involve collaborating with clients, troubleshooting issues, and ensuring that solutions meet project specifications and safety standards. Unlike permanent employees, contract engineers are usually engaged for specific projects or time frames and may work independently or as part of a team.

What is the difference between Contract Power Electronics Engineer vs Contract Electrical Engineer?

Job description

Design the Power Behind Life-Changing Technology

We’re an innovative, fast-moving engineering team developing advanced systems that make a real-world impact. Our environment is collaborative, hands-on, and built for engineers who want to own their work and see it come to life.

If you're passionate about power electronics and enjoy working from concept through production in a tight-knit team, this is an opportunity to do meaningful work with high visibility and impact.

What You’ll Do

As a Senior Power Electronics Engineer, you’ll play a critical role in designing and delivering cutting-edge hardware solutions. This is a highly autonomous position where you’ll take projects from initial concept through prototyping to production release.

You’ll work closely with a small, skilled team—giving you the opportunity to influence design decisions, contribute ideas, and directly shape product performance.

In this role, you will:

  • Own full-cycle hardware design projects with a high degree of independence
  • Design and develop high-performance PWM amplifiers and efficient power supply systems
  • Program and integrate microprocessors and FPGAs into hardware designs
  • Perform circuit design, analysis, and simulation using LTSpice (or equivalent tools)
  • Build, test, and troubleshoot prototypes in a hands-on lab environment
  • Drive iterative improvements through testing, data analysis, and problem-solving
  • Collaborate closely with cross-functional teammates to deliver robust, production-ready designs

What You Bring

We’re looking for a driven, hands-on engineer who thrives in a collaborative, fast-paced environment and enjoys solving complex technical challenges.

Basic Qualifications:

  • BSEE required; MSEE preferred
  • 3+ years of experience in electrical or hardware design

Technical Expertise:

  • Strong foundation in power electronics design and analysis
  • Proven experience designing PWM amplifiers and power systems
  • Embedded programming experience (microprocessors and FPGAs)
  • Proficiency with circuit simulation tools such as LTSpice

Hands-On Skills:

  • Comfort working in a lab environment and debugging real hardware
  • Experience with standard lab equipment (oscilloscopes, function generators, multimeters, power analyzers)

Who You Are

  • Highly motivated, hands-on, and self-directed
  • Comfortable owning projects and driving them forward independently
  • Strong communicator who collaborates effectively within a small team
  • Energized by solving complex technical problems and seeing designs come to life

Why Join Us?

  • Real impact: Work on meaningful technology with tangible results
  • Ownership: Take full responsibility for projects and decisions
  • Hands-on innovation: Move beyond theory into real-world design and testing
  • Tight-knit team: Collaborate closely with experienced engineers
  • Growth potential: Expand your expertise across power electronics, embedded systems, and product development

What We Offer

We value the dedication and contributions of our employees and are committed to supporting both professional success and personal well-being. Our competitive total rewards package is designed to help you thrive—at work and in life.

Benefits & Perks:

  • 9/80 Work Schedule – Enjoy every other Friday off for better work-life balance
  • Flexible Vacation Policy – Take time off as needed to recharge and stay balanced
  • Comprehensive Benefits Package – Medical, dental, vision, life insurance, and disability coverage
  • Health Savings Support – Company contributions to:
    • HRA (for PPO plan participants)
    • HSA (for high-deductible health plan participants)
  • 401(k) with Company Match – Immediate vesting to help you invest in your future from day one
  • Continuous Education Assistance – Ongoing support for professional growth and career development
  • Collaborative Culture – Work in a supportive, team-oriented environment that values innovation and operational excellence

We believe our people are our greatest asset—and we strive to create an environment where you feel empowered, supported, and inspired to grow.
