The University of South Dakota university law enforcement officer (police officer) will perform all the duties of a law enforcement officer, including patrolling the university campus and outlying areas; enforcing local, state and federal laws as well as campus rules and regulations; responding to calls for service; initiating police reports; performing follow-up investigations as needed; directing traffic; and other duties as assigned. Officers may conduct educational activities related to safety and crime prevention. Officers will coordinate law enforcement tasks with other law enforcement agencies. Officers shall prepare accurate and detailed reports and maintain records. Officers may train and instruct other employees in performing these tasks.
Police officers currently work a rotating schedule. Shifts are midnight to 8 AM, 8 AM to 4 PM, and 4 PM to midnight.
The applicant must meet the minimum standards as outlined in SD Administrative Rule Chapter 2:01:02:01 and obtain deputization through the City of Vermillion Police Department. Employment is contingent upon a successful background check, psychological evaluation, and polygraph exam, and medical examination (including drug testing). Per SD Administrative Rule Chapter 2:01:02:01, applicants must be a US citizen and be at least 21 years of age at the time of appointment. Travel is required to complete required training and job duties.
