Employer & Industry UsageFreelance or independent contractor roles in manufacturingFull-time or part-time roles within manufacturing or production companies
Search & Comparison IntentPeople seeking flexible, project-based machining workIndividuals looking for a stable machining job within a company

Contract Machining involves working independently on specific projects for various clients, often requiring certifications in CNC programming. Machinists are typically employed by manufacturing companies, performing machining tasks regularly. While both roles require technical skills, contract machinists enjoy flexibility, whereas machinists benefit from job stability.

How much is a CNC machinist paid?

CNC machinists typically earn between $20 and $30 per hour, with annual salaries ranging from approximately $40,000 to $60,000 depending on experience, location, and certifications. Skilled machinists proficient in CAD/CAM software and operating various CNC machines tend to earn higher wages.

Can a CNC machinist make 100k a year?

Experienced CNC machinists with advanced skills, certifications, and specialization in high-demand industries can potentially earn $100,000 or more annually, especially with overtime, supervisory roles, or working in high-cost regions. However, entry-level positions typically offer lower wages, and reaching this salary level often requires years of experience and proficiency with complex machinery and programming.

What jobs make $3,000 a day?

In contract machining, highly specialized roles such as precision CNC machinists or toolmakers working on complex projects can earn around $3,000 per day, especially when working overtime or on high-value contracts. These positions often require advanced skills, certifications, and experience with advanced machinery and CAD/CAM software.

What is the highest paying machining job?

In machining, roles such as CNC programmer, CNC supervisor, or precision machining manager tend to have the highest salaries due to their specialized skills and leadership responsibilities. Advanced certifications, experience with complex machinery, and working in high-demand industries can also increase earning potential for machinists.

Job description

Job Summary:

The Program Manager is responsible for coordinating and overseeing customer programs from inception through delivery in a medium-sized contract machining and manufacturing environment. This role serves as the primary point of contact between the company and its customers, ensuring that quality, schedule, and cost objectives are met while maintaining high levels of customer satisfaction and internal efficiency. This position requires a highly proactive, hands-on individual who engages deeply in program details to ensure team commitments and contractual requirements are met.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Serve as the primary liaison between customers and internal departments (engineering, production, quality, purchasing).
  • Monitor all aspects of customer programs: pricing, scheduling, production planning, delivery, and follow-up.
  • Develop and maintain project timelines to ensure milestones are met on time and within budget.
  • Collaborate with engineering and manufacturing teams to ensure manufacturability and compliance with customer specifications.
  • Monitor program performance using key metrics (OTD, cost, and quality), and provide regular status reports to stakeholders.
  • Anticipate and resolve potential issues with procurement, scheduling, quality, or customer expectations.
  • Lead regular internal and customer-facing meetings to provide updates, facilitate planning, and resolve problems.
  • Drive continuous improvement efforts in program execution and customer service.
  • Support contract review, risk analysis, and documentation processes for new and ongoing projects.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelorโ€™s degree in Business, Engineering, Manufacturing, or related field (or equivalent experience).
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in a program or project management role, preferably in a mid-sized machine shop, CNC manufacturing, or aerospace/defense environment.
  • Strong understanding of machining, fabrication, and assembly processes.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Proven ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Proficient in ERP/MRP systems and MS Office (especially Excel and Project).
  • Familiarity with quality systems (AS9100, ISO 9001) and job shop manufacturing workflows.
  • Self-Starter with ability to execute daily tasks, manage schedule, and resolve issues by engaging the affected parties, with little oversight.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • PMP or similar project management certification.
  • Experience in aerospace, defense, or medical device manufacturing.
  • Working knowledge of CAD/CAM files and manufacturing documentation (blueprints, routers, travelers).
  • Experience with government or military contracts (DFARS, ITAR).
  • Self-starter with a strong sense of ownership and accountability for program outcomes
  • Results-driven mindset; comfortable challenging assumptions, escalating issues when necessary, and driving decisions to closure
  • Detail-oriented with the ability to maintain focus on overall program objectives, priorities, and business impact
  • Effective collaborator who works well across engineering, manufacturing, supply chain, quality, finance, and customer organizations
  • Strong leadership presence with the ability to influence without direct authority in a matrix environment
  • Decisive and adaptable; able to balance competing priorities in a dynamic, fast-paced environment
  • Proactive problem-solver who anticipates issues and takes action before they impact program performance
  • Professional, customer-focused demeanor with the ability to build trust and credibility

Work Environment:

  • Office and shop floor setting.
  • Requires occasional interaction on the production floor (PPE required).
  • Fast-paced, deadline-driven environment with changing priorities.

Shift Schedule:

8:00 am - 5:00 pm
