What is a contract embedded systems engineer?

Contract Embedded Systems Engineers are professionals hired on a temporary or project basis to design, develop, and maintain embedded systems—specialized computing systems that perform dedicated functions within larger mechanical or electrical systems. Unlike permanent employees, contract engineers typically work for a set period or until a specific project is completed, offering flexibility to both engineers and employers. They may work on projects involving hardware and software integration, firmware development, real-time operating systems, and troubleshooting embedded devices. Their skills are often sought in industries like automotive, consumer electronics, medical devices, and industrial automation.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a contract embedded systems engineer?

To thrive as a Contract Embedded Systems Engineer, you generally need a solid background in computer engineering or electrical engineering, with expertise in C/C++ programming, real-time operating systems (RTOS), and hardware-software integration. Familiarity with tools like oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, version control systems (such as Git), and protocols like SPI, I2C, or UART is typically required, along with certifications like Certified Embedded Systems Engineer (CESE) being advantageous. Strong problem-solving skills, adaptability, and effective communication are crucial soft skills for collaborating with diverse teams and clients. These skills and qualifications are essential to deliver reliable, efficient embedded solutions on time while meeting client specifications in a dynamic contract environment.

What are some common challenges faced by contract embedded systems engineers, and how can they be addressed?

Contract embedded systems engineers often encounter challenges such as rapidly adapting to new codebases, working within tight project timelines, and ensuring seamless integration with existing hardware and software. Success in this role often requires strong communication with both in-house and external teams to clarify requirements and resolve issues quickly. Proactively documenting your work, asking clarifying questions early, and leveraging version control systems can help manage these challenges and deliver reliable solutions on schedule.

What is the difference between Contract Embedded Systems Engineer vs Contract Firmware Engineer?

AspectContract Embedded Systems EngineerContract Firmware Engineer
Required CredentialsBachelor's in Electrical, Computer Engineering, or related; often certifications in embedded systemsBachelor's in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering; certifications in embedded or firmware development
Work EnvironmentDesigning and testing embedded hardware/software in labs or on-siteDeveloping and debugging firmware primarily in software environments
Employer & Industry UsageElectronics, aerospace, automotive, industrial automationConsumer electronics, IoT devices, robotics, embedded systems

Contract Embedded Systems Engineers focus on designing and integrating hardware and software for embedded systems, often working with both hardware and firmware. Contract Firmware Engineers specialize in developing low-level software that runs directly on embedded hardware. While both roles require embedded systems knowledge, the embedded systems engineer has a broader scope including hardware design, whereas firmware engineers concentrate on software development within embedded environments.

Job description

Why Tractable?
We combine world-class AI research with real-world applications that make a difference. At Tractable, you'll collaborate with brilliant minds, work on transformative projects, and contribute to technology that helps people when they need it most.
Tractable is a leader in AI for auto repair and insurance, backed by SoftBank, Insight Partners, and Georgian. LUMA is our internal startup: a small Salt Lake City team building a drive-through scanner that pushes vehicle damage assessment toward real-time AI identification and repair estimation.
Our Salt Lake City office is home to the small team that designs, builds, and produces the LUMA scanner - hands-on work, close to the hardware. Expect startup pace and real ownership, backed by the data and funding of a company that has already proven the model at scale.
About the role
We're building LUMA, a drive-through vehicle inspection scanner that combines multi-camera capture, active illumination, and multiple sensor modalities to produce high-fidelity vehicle imagery and measurements.
We're looking for an Embedded Systems Engineer to help build and evolve the device-side (edge) software and firmware stack - controlling cameras and sensors, synchronizing capture, and building new measurement capabilities. The role sits at the intersection of embedded software, hardware integration, and sensor/vision data processing. You'll take features from quick prototype through to production-grade reliability, and you'll see them run on real vehicles.
What you'll do
  • Build and maintain embedded Linux software and firmware for the camera and sensor stack.
  • Maintain and improve camera control software: triggering, timing, health monitoring, and error recovery.
  • Maintain and improve sensor control software: presence/distance/measurement sensors, calibration, and fault handling.
  • Build signal processing pipelines - e.g. converting laser-triangulation outputs into 2D tread-depth maps, post-processing stereo depth, filtering/denoising, and coordinate transforms.
  • Prototype fast, then harden to production-grade reliability.
  • Support integration and deployments: bring up new modules, validate in the lab and on-vehicle, debug issues, and ship fixes.

What we're looking for
  • 3+ years of experience in embedded engineering.
  • Production coding in C/C++ and/or Python, backed by strong software engineering fundamentals (OOP, testing, debugging, version control).
  • Embedded Linux expertise, including system services, supervision, logging, and performance profiling.
  • Hands-on hardware & sensor integration using standard protocols (UART, I2C, SPI, GPIO) and industrial interfaces (RS-485, CAN, or Modbus).
  • Practical lab & bring-up skills: proficient with oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, multimeters, basic soldering/wiring, and reading datasheets/schematics.
  • Modern developer workflow: experience using AI coding tools (Cursor, Claude Code, OpenAI Codex) to rapidly iterate high-quality code.
  • Ownership mindset: ability to navigate ambiguous requirements, solve tough problems, and ship maintainable systems in a fast-paced environment.

What success looks like
  • Camera and sensor stacks run reliably for months, with clear telemetry and graceful recovery.
  • New capabilities move from prototype → validated pipeline → production release.
  • Hardware bring-up gets faster over time as tooling, test harnesses, and standards improve.

Contract type: Permanent
Compensation: $120-150k + equity
Diversity commitment
At Tractable, we are committed to building a diverse team and inclusive workplace where people's varied backgrounds and experiences are valued and recognised.
We encourage applications from candidates of all backgrounds and offer equal opportunities without discrimination.
