What is a contract electrical engineer?

Contract electrical engineers are professionals who work on a temporary or project-specific basis to design, develop, test, and supervise the manufacturing and installation of electrical systems and equipment. Unlike full-time employees, they are usually hired for a set duration or to complete specific projects, offering flexibility to both employers and engineers. Their work can span industries such as construction, manufacturing, energy, and telecommunications. Contract electrical engineers often bring specialized expertise and can help organizations meet tight deadlines or fill skill gaps without committing to long-term employment.

What are some common challenges contract electrical engineers face when working with multiple clients simultaneously?

Contract electrical engineers often juggle several projects at once, which can make time management and prioritization challenging. Each client may have different expectations, communication styles, and project requirements, so adapting quickly and maintaining clear documentation is essential. Additionally, contract engineers need to stay up-to-date with various industry standards and ensure that their work complies with differing regulations for each client. Successful contract electrical engineers are proactive communicators and skilled at managing shifting deadlines to deliver high-quality results.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a contract electrical engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Contract Electrical Engineer, you need a solid background in electrical engineering principles, circuit design, and relevant industry experience, typically supported by a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering. Proficiency in CAD software (such as AutoCAD or Altium), simulation tools, and knowledge of electrical codes and standards is crucial, along with certifications like Professional Engineer (PE) being advantageous. Strong problem-solving, time management, and effective communication skills help you excel in client-facing and project-based environments. These competencies are vital for delivering quality results on time, ensuring compliance, and maintaining strong professional relationships while working independently or with diverse teams.

What is the difference between Contract Electrical Engineering vs Electrical Engineering?

AspectContract Electrical EngineeringElectrical Engineering
CredentialsTypically requires a relevant degree and professional licensing; often involves freelance or temporary certificationsRequires a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering; licensure (PE) is common for advanced roles
Work EnvironmentProject-based, flexible locations, often remote or on-site at client sitesOffice-based, research labs, or manufacturing facilities; more permanent employment
Employer & Industry UsageConsulting firms, contractors, freelance projects in construction, power, and automationManufacturers, tech companies, utilities, and government agencies

Contract Electrical Engineering involves temporary, project-specific work often with flexible locations, while Electrical Engineering typically refers to full-time roles within organizations. Both roles require relevant credentials, but contract roles emphasize adaptability and freelance work, whereas full-time electrical engineers focus on ongoing development and design within companies.

Job description

Job Title: Electrical Engineer – Power Distribution EquipmentJob Description

This role focuses on the design, execution, and support of custom low- and medium-voltage power distribution equipment within a manufacturing environment. The Electrical Engineer reviews customer specifications, contract drawings, and project requirements to develop accurate engineering designs and documentation that enable efficient manufacturing and successful project execution. The position works closely with cross-functional teams to ensure that switchgear, switchboards, panelboards, motor control centers, and related power distribution equipment are designed correctly from the outset and meet all applicable standards and customer expectations.

Responsibilities
  • Review customer specifications, contract drawings, purchase orders, and project requirements to develop compliant and accurate engineering solutions.
  • Design and modify electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, single-line diagrams, and related engineering documentation using AutoCAD.
  • Generate, update, and maintain bills of materials (BOMs) and all supporting engineering documentation required for manufacturing and project execution.
  • Support the engineering and manufacturing of low- and medium-voltage switchgear, switchboards, panelboards, motor control centers (MCCs), and other power distribution equipment.
  • Ensure all designs comply with relevant industry standards and codes, including UL, ANSI, IEEE, IEC, NEC, and applicable customer specifications.
  • Collaborate closely with manufacturing, quality, purchasing, testing, and mechanical engineering teams throughout the project lifecycle to ensure successful execution.
  • Identify design issues early in the project lifecycle and proactively resolve technical concerns before equipment reaches production.
  • Participate in design reviews, customer submittal reviews, inspections, witness testing, and project meetings as required.
  • Provide technical support on component selection, system integration, and manufacturing concerns while addressing customer requirements.
  • Support engineering process improvements, standardization efforts, and continuous improvement initiatives across products and processes.
  • Evaluate the constructability and manufacturability of designs to ensure equipment can be built efficiently, safely, and correctly in a production environment.
  • Manage engineering projects independently from initial design through manufacturing release, ensuring adherence to scope, quality, and schedule.
Essential Skills
  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering.
  • 3+ years of experience supporting electrical engineering projects within a manufacturing environment.
  • Experience with low-voltage and/or medium-voltage power distribution equipment.
  • Hands-on experience creating and modifying electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, single-line diagrams, engineering documentation, and bills of materials (BOMs).
  • Proficiency with AutoCAD for electrical design and documentation.
  • Ability to interpret customer specifications, contract drawings, and electrical requirements and translate them into compliant designs.
  • Working knowledge of electrical engineering standards and codes, including UL, ANSI, IEEE, IEC, and NEC.
  • Demonstrated experience in electrical design for power distribution systems, including switchgear, switchboards, control panels, and control systems.
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to collaborate effectively across engineering, manufacturing, quality, purchasing, testing, and mechanical design teams.
  • Ability to manage projects independently from initial design through manufacturing release in a production environment.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
  • 3+ years of experience in electrical design within a manufacturing facility, particularly in power distribution or related equipment.
  • Experience in environments such as switchgear manufacturing, switchboard manufacturing, motor control centers (MCCs), industrial electrical equipment manufacturing, utility power distribution equipment, or electrical assemblies and control systems supporting power distribution.
  • Background in designing or supporting low-voltage and medium-voltage power distribution systems for utilities and commercial operations.
  • Experience with switchgear, control panels, control system design, and power distribution systems, including utilities and switchboards.
  • Familiarity with UL standards such as UL508, UL508A, and related UL requirements for power distribution and control equipment.
  • Experience generating and managing bills of materials (BOMs) and other structured engineering documentation in a manufacturing context.
  • Ability to evaluate and improve standardization and continuous improvement initiatives within engineering processes.
  • Strong attention to detail and a methodical approach to ensuring compliance with customer specifications and industry standards.
Work Environment

The role is based in a power distribution manufacturing facility focused on low- and medium-voltage switchgear, switchboards, panelboards, motor control centers, and related power distribution equipment. The environment involves close collaboration with manufacturing, quality, purchasing, testing, and mechanical engineering teams on the production floor and in an engineering office setting. Engineers regularly work with AutoCAD and other engineering tools to support design and documentation, while also engaging with production activities such as design reviews, inspections, and witness testing. The facility supports utilities and commercial operations and is expanding with an additional nearby location, offering opportunities to contribute to a growing operation in a hands-on, production-oriented setting.
