Job description

Title: Switchgear Electrical Engineer

FLSA Status: Exempt

Department: Engineering

Location: Corona, CA – May support multiple facilities

(approximately 5 miles apart)


General Summary:

The Switchgear Electrical Engineer is responsible for the engineering and execution of low and medium voltage switchgear systems for commercial, industrial, and utility applications. This role independently evaluates customer requirements, electrical plans, specifications, and project objectives to develop compliant engineering solutions and technical designs. The Switchgear Electrical Engineer exercises professional engineering judgment in the creation and review of electrical drawings, equipment selections, and engineering documentation while ensuring compliance with applicable industry standards, including NEC, NFPA, ANSI, UL, IEEE, and IEC. The role serves as a technical leader and subject matter expert, collaborating with internal and external stakeholders to support project execution, manufacturing, quality, and continuous improvement initiatives.


Essential Functions:

  • Evaluates customer electrical & mechanical drawings, specifications, and project requirements to develop compliant engineering solutions and determine appropriate switchgear system configurations
  • Designs, develops, and reviews electrical drawings and engineering bills of materials (BOMs) for low and medium voltage switchgear projects
  • Prepares and maintains engineering documentation to support drafting, procurement, and manufacturing activities
  • Creates and maintains engineering bills of materials (BOMs) for low and medium voltage switchgear, switchboards, panelboards, and control panels while selecting components and equipment that meet application requirements, customer specifications, and applicable industry standards including NEC, NFPA, ANSI, UL, IEEE, and IEC
  • Performs design reviews and engineering evaluations to validate system performance, code compliance, equipment selection, and overall design integrity
  • Provides engineering direction and technical leadership to Manufacturing, Drafting, Purchasing, Quality, and Production teams regarding design intent, engineering requirements, and technical problem resolution
  • Serves as the primary technical resource for customers, consultants, contractors, distributors, and internal stakeholders regarding product application, system performance, code compliance, and engineering solutions
  • Leads technical reviews, drawing reviews, engineering evaluations, inspections, and witness testing activities to support project execution and customer requirements
  • Manages changes to order requirements and supports technical evaluation of warranty-related issues, corrective actions, and product concerns
  • Identifies and implements product design improvements, engineering process enhancements, and standardization initiatives to improve quality, manufacturability, reliability, and operational efficiency
  • Maintains current knowledge of product technologies, electrical codes, and industry standards, including NEC, NFPA, ANSI, UL, IEEE, and IEC
  • Complies with environmental, health, and safety guidelines and supports additional duties and special projects as assigned


REQUIRED SKILLS, EDUCATION AND PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE:

  • Engineering Project Leadership, independently managing engineering priorities, project deliverables, schedules, design reviews, and technical documentation throughout the project lifecycle
  • Independent Judgment and Decision Making, exercising professional engineering judgment to evaluate technical alternatives, resolve complex engineering challenges, and determine compliant design solutions
  • Technical Leadership and Customer Engagement, serving as a trusted engineering resource for customers, contractors, consultants, and internal teams regarding technical solutions and project execution
  • Continuous Improvement and Engineering Optimization, identifying opportunities to improve product design, engineering processes, and documentation practices
  • Software and System Proficiency, utilizing AutoCAD and Microsoft Office tools to support engineering design, documentation, and communication
  • Language and Communication Skills, ability to read, write, and speak English is required; bilingual in English/Spanish is preferred


Professional Experience/Education/Certifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering from an accredited institution required
  • 3–5 years of electrical engineering experience in power distribution, switchgear, industrial controls, or related electrical systems
  • 3–5 years of experience designing, reviewing, and approving electrical drawings and control system documentation
  • 3–5 years of experience working with low and medium voltage electrical systems, components, and equipment
  • 3–5 years of experience applying electrical engineering design principles and industry standards, including NEC, NFPA, ANSI, UL, IEEE, and IEC
  • Experience with AutoCAD or similar design software preferred
  • Experience with control design and electrical system integration preferred
