Job description

City Cast DC is hiring a sharp, meticulous copy editor to join our team on a part-time contract basis, for a 5 month contract. You'll be the last set of eyes on everything we publish - newsletters, articles, social posts and everything in between - making sure our work is clean, consistent and ready for our audience.

What You'll Do
  • Serve as the final read on all City Cast DC content before publication
  • Catch errors in grammar, spelling, punctuation and style
  • Fact-check stories, spot inconsistencies, and ensure stories are clear, concise and fair
  • Write and refine headlines that are sharp, accurate and fit our voice
  • Smooth sentences without losing the writer's voice
  • Work closely with reporters and editors in a collaborative environment
  • You will likely work an afternoon shift, aligned with copy deadlines, i.e. 2-6 p.m. M-F 

Requirements

What You Bring
  • Experience in copy editing, journalism, or a related field

  • A knack for headlines: punchy, precise, and on-brand
  • Highly organized and reliable under deadline pressure
  • Easy to work with - you give good notes and take them too

The Copy Editor will report to the Managing Editor of City Cast DC. The hourly rate is $35-$40/hour depending on experience. You must be local, though work will be primarily remote.
