Job description

Description:

The Postpartum Doula provides compassionate, culturally responsive, and nonclinical support to birthing individuals and families during the postpartum period. This role focuses on promoting maternal mental health, infant care, and family well-being through education, emotional support, and resource navigation. The Postpartum Doula helps families adjust to life with a newborn, offering guidance on feeding, sleep, recovery, and bonding. This position is rooted in a commitment to birth equity, trauma-informed care, and serving communities that face systemic barriers to postpartum support.


Essential Functions

  • Carry a minimum caseload of 15 families and provide emotional and physical support to the birthing person or adoptive parent, and their families, during the postpartum period and up to a year post-birth
  • Conduct postnatal in-person/virtual visits with the birthing person in accordance with program protocol
  • Provide information, education, and resources related to the postpartum period
  • Support the birthing person by increasing their ability to advocate for themselves, especially during the postpartum period
  • Maintain regular communication with birthing person via phone/text during usual business hours
  • Ensure the birthing person is receiving self-care techniques, lactation support, and strategies to optimize parent/baby bonding and attachment
  • Discuss perinatal mental health with birthing person(s), and screen for depression and anxiety during the postpartum period (and refer to proper services, if necessary)
  • Encourage and support birthing person to attend postpartum visits with their medical provider
  • Develop and maintain positive and collaborative relationships with area hospitals, prenatal clinics, pediatric providers, birthing facilities, and community-based organizations
  • Document accurate postnatal visits with the birthing person using program collection forms and complete data entry into the program database
  • Meet with Postpartum Doula Supervisor regularly to review program progress, challenges, and data collection
  • Attend evening and weekend events as necessary

Requirements:
  • NJ Department of Health recognized Doula or Postpartum Doula training program certification is required
  • 1-2 years of experience providing community education, home visiting, and/or supportive services for birthing individuals and families is preferred
  • Bilingual fluency in English and Spanish is preferred
  • Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite is required
  • Must be able to travel to various clinic/hospital locations and birthing persons’ homes as needed
