Contract Data Engineering information

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Contract Data Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Contract Data Engineer, you need strong proficiency in data modeling, ETL processes, and programming languages such as Python or SQL, often supported by a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with big data platforms (e.g., Hadoop, Spark), cloud services (AWS, Azure, GCP), and relevant certifications like Google Cloud Professional Data Engineer are typically required. Excellent problem-solving, adaptability, and effective communication are crucial soft skills in this role. These competencies enable efficient project delivery, seamless collaboration with stakeholders, and the ability to quickly adapt to new technical environments and client requirements.

What are some common challenges faced by contract data engineers and how can they be addressed?

Contract data engineers often face the challenge of quickly familiarizing themselves with a company's existing data infrastructure and processes. Since contracts are typically short-term, there is limited time to onboard, understand unique data pipelines, and build relationships with stakeholders. To address this, successful contract data engineers proactively communicate with team members, document their work thoroughly, and leverage their prior experience with a variety of tools and platforms. Flexibility and strong problem-solving skills are essential for adapting to new environments and delivering results efficiently.

What is contract data engineering?

Contract data engineering refers to hiring data engineers on a temporary or project basis, rather than as full-time employees. Contract data engineers are responsible for designing, building, and maintaining data pipelines, databases, and other infrastructure to support data analytics and business needs. Companies often hire contract data engineers to handle specific projects, scale up teams quickly, or bring in specialized skills for a limited time. This arrangement offers flexibility for both the company and the engineer, and is common in industries with fluctuating data workloads or short-term projects.

What is the difference between Contract Data Engineering vs Data Analyst?

AspectContract Data EngineeringData Analyst
Required SkillsSQL, Python, ETL, cloud platforms, data pipeline developmentSQL, Excel, data visualization, reporting tools
Work EnvironmentProject-based, technical teams, cloud or on-premises infrastructureBusiness units, reporting teams, often in office or remote
Industry UsageTech, finance, healthcare, retailMarketing, finance, healthcare, retail

Contract Data Engineers focus on building and maintaining data pipelines and infrastructure, requiring technical skills in programming and cloud platforms. Data Analysts interpret data, create reports, and visualize insights, often using different tools. While both roles work with data, Contract Data Engineering is more technical and infrastructure-oriented, whereas Data Analysts focus on data interpretation and business insights.

Job Description Summary:

Breakthru Beverage Group (BBG) is in the midst of a major enterprise transformation to modernize our data foundations, simplify our technology landscape, and enable AI-driven decision-making across the business. A core pillar of this transformation is the development of a modern, scalable Snowflake data platform on AWS - the backbone for enterprise reporting, data products, and advanced analytics.
We are seeking a strategic, hands-on engineering and architecture leader to build and evolve BBG's enterprise data platform and establish our long-term enterprise architecture standards. This senior data leader will define the blueprint for how data is ingested, modeled, governed, and consumed - while also being unafraid to dive into code, solve complex engineering challenges, and set engineering excellence across the organization.
The Sr. Director of Data Engineering & Enterprise Architecture will lead the teams and capabilities responsible for building BBG's modern data platform and defining the enterprise-wide data architecture required for operational reporting, business insights, and AI products. This role sits at the intersection of strategy, architecture, and hands-on engineering. You will define and enforce architectural patterns, build reusable data products, drive modernization away from legacy systems, and ensure the platform is AI-ready and scalable to support BBG's multi-year transformation agenda.

Job Description:

This role follows a flexible hybrid schedule, with two days per week in the office and three days working from home. This role can be performed from any Breakthru Beverage Office Location.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Build & Lead High-Performing Teams
    • Build, hire, and lead a high-performing team of data engineers and architects, setting clear expectations, standards, and accountability.
    • Coach, mentor, and develop team members through hands-on technical leadership, fostering a culture of excellence, ownership, and continuous improvement.
  • Strategy & Planning
  • Define and own the multi-year data engineering and enterprise data architecture strategy, ensuring alignment with BBG's short- and long-term business objectives and overall technology roadmap.
  • Translate enterprise and business priorities into a clear, executable roadmap that balances near-term delivery, long-term architectural integrity, and AI readiness.
  • Partner with IT, Finance, and business leaders to prioritize initiatives, sequence investments, and ensure disciplined execution across BBG's data and technology transformation portfolio.
  • Lead Data Engineering & Platform Build
    • Build, lead, and mature BBG's Data Engineering function responsible for the Snowflake data platform, ingestion pipelines, data transformations, and reusable enterprise data assets.
    • Develop and enforce modern engineering standards - CI/CD, dbt, Terraform, orchestration, testing, observability - to drive reliability, automation, and consistency.
    • Engineer the platform for AI readiness and developer productivity, designing scalable, AI-ready data foundations while leveraging AI-assisted development to accelerate delivery, improve code quality, and enhance the day-to-day engineer experience across the Data & AI organization.
  • Own Enterprise Data Architecture
    • Define the enterprise data architecture roadmap across ingestion patterns, canonical modeling, data products, MDM alignment, semantic layers, and AI-ready structures.
    • Establish standards for data modeling, metadata, lineage, data contracts, data quality, and architectural governance across the organization.
    • Own enterprise data architecture decisions and tooling strategy, leading evaluation, selection, and governance of data platforms and tools to ensure they align with BBG's target architecture, security standards, scalability requirements, and long-term roadmap.
  • Be Hands-On when Needed
    • Act as a hands-on technical leader, setting the engineering bar through direct involvement in complex technical challenges and critical architectural decisions.
    • Comfortable writing, reviewing and approving production-grade code (SQL, Python, dbt, Terraform) if required, ensuring high standards for quality, performance, security, and maintainability.
    • Lead code reviews and design reviews, providing constructive feedback, enforcing best practices, and ensuring alignment with BBG's engineering and architectural standards.
  • Partner Across the Business
    • Work closely with BBG's business functions to translate their needs into scalable data architecture and engineering deliverables.
    • Collaborate with SAP, AWS, and Snowflake partners to ensure alignment with BBG's modernization and investment roadmap.
    • Communicate architectural decisions clearly to both technical and non-technical stakeholders, influencing direction and securing alignment.
  • Other duties, as assigned by the jobholder's supervisor, may also be required

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in business, engineering, information technology or related work experience
  • 15+ years of experience in data engineering, enterprise data architecture, or software engineering, with 8+ years in an engineering or architecture leadership role.
  • Proven experience building, leading, and scaling high-performing engineering and architecture teams, including hiring, coaching, performance management, and developing senior technical leaders.
  • Deep experience architecting and operating modern cloud data platforms - ideally Snowflake on AWS - including storage design, compute optimization, performance tuning, and cost governance.
  • Hands-on expertise with SQL, Python, data modeling, ELT pipelines, dbt, orchestration frameworks (Airflow/MWAA), and DevOps tooling such as GitLab CI/CD.
  • Strong experience designing enterprise-wide data architecture, including canonical models, domain-driven data products, semantic layers, and MDM integrations.
  • Familiarity with SAP ECC/S/4 data structures and integration approaches (ODP, IDocs, APIs) is a plus.
  • Demonstrated ability to define architectural standards, influence engineering teams, and drive alignment across IT, business partners, and external vendors.
  • Experience enabling AI/ML use cases through well-designed data pipelines, feature stores, vector-enabled data sets, or integration with AWS (SageMaker, Bedrock) or Snowflake (Cortex) AI services.
  • A strong mix of strategic thinking and hands-on execution - able to see the big picture, define the long-term architecture, and also dive into code when necessary.
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to guide decisions, simplify complexity, and represent data engineering and architecture at all levels of the organization.

Physical Requirements:

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to remain in a stationary position at times; communicate, and operate a computer and telephone.

Competencies:

  • Ability to develop complex, multi-project communication plans that understand IT goals, priorities, and resource constraints.
  • Anticipates significant problems and efficiently resolves most with minimal input; develops creative, feasible solutions to advanced problems, effectively advocates for adoption of proposed solutions and develops process for them.
  • Be decisive, a strategic planner, manage multiple tasks and deadlines, have excellent problem-solving skills, have strong business and budgeting acumen, and display calmness and composure under stress or uncertainty, inspiring the same in direct reports.
