Job description

Controller

Location: Montréal, QC

Type: Full-time, permanent

About the Role

Our client, a growing project-based company in Montréal, is looking for a hands-on, bilingual Controller to own their full-cycle accounting and finance function. Reporting to senior leadership, you'll be both the technical anchor of the finance team and a strategic partner to the President and CFO — the person who closes the books and helps shape the decisions behind the numbers.

This is a player-coach role in a dynamic, project-based environment. If you like ownership, variety, and being close to the business rather than buried in it, you'll thrive here.

What You'll Do

  • Own the full accounting cycle — GL, AP/AR, billing and collections, reconciliations, journal entries, accruals, fixed assets, and intercompany transactions.
  • Lead month-end, quarter-end, and year-end closings, including reconciliations, adjusting entries, and financial statement preparation.
  • Deliver financial reporting and analysis — timely statements, management reports, dashboards, and insight on profitability, cash flow, budget variances, and project performance.
  • Drive budgeting and forecasting in partnership with department managers, and monitor performance against plan.
  • Manage cash flow and treasury — forecasting, banking relationships, credit facilities, and working capital optimization.
  • Ensure Québec and Canadian compliance — GST/QST, payroll remittances, corporate tax installments, T4/RL-1, CNESST, and year-end obligations.
  • Strengthen internal controls and continuously improve accounting processes and systems.
  • Act as the primary contact for external accountants, auditors, tax advisors, and financial institutions, and coordinate annual audits/reviews.
  • Lead and mentor the finance team, setting priorities, reviewing work, and building accountability.
  • Partner with management on new projects, contracts, investments, and strategic initiatives, evaluating financial implications and flagging risks and opportunities.

What You Bring

  • CPA designation.
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or a related field.
  • 5–8+ years of progressive accounting and finance experience, including time in a Controller, Assistant Controller, or Accounting Manager capacity.
  • Strong command of full-cycle accounting, financial reporting, and month-end/year-end close.
  • Solid knowledge of Québec and Canadian tax and payroll requirements.
  • Experience with budgeting, forecasting, cash-flow management, and financial analysis.
  • A track record of building internal controls and mentoring accounting staff.
  • Experience with ERP/accounting systems (Sage, QuickBooks, NetSuite, Business Central, or comparable) and advanced Excel.
  • Fluency in French and English, spoken and written — you'll work across employees, management, government agencies, auditors, and external advisors in both languages.

Considered an asset: experience in professional services, consulting, construction, engineering, real estate, or another project-based environment, and experience managing accounting across multiple departments, entities, or business lines.

Why This Role

Join a growing, project-driven Montréal company where the finance function is central to how the business runs. You'll have real ownership, direct access to leadership, and the room to improve systems and processes rather than just maintain them.

Our client is an equal opportunity employer. We thank all applicants; only those selected for an interview will be contacted.
